thats absolutely right Fom. it seems that no one blabs about the numerous good times, but when the bad times come they cry pretty loud... no machinery is invinceable...just some outlasts others.
They all seem to have some problems, on FTE all we find out about is the just Ford ones. On the other forums I`m sure they`ll have their share of problems, possibly more than our`s.
That seems to be the way with a lot of things these days unfortunetly.
They dont seem to make anything half as good as they used too.
By the way sherm, ford doesnt make the diesel for their powerstrokes And ford also had 5.9 cummins in lots of mid duty trucks. Cummins has been in lots of fords, just not all light duty ones!
I`ve got the Ford built 7.8 turbo engine in my L8000, one real sweet, quiet and reasonably powerful engine. I think it beats the 3208 Cat in the other L8000.

i know. thats my arguement on many occasions when someone is crapping on the superduty's. if dodge had signed on with Navistar they would have had the same chitty deal. i still firmly believe that the 6.0 and 6.4 are much more refined than the cummins though, they sound much better, run smoother, and are planted in a F-series. sure they have they're problems, but hey...lets all take a walk over to a dodge Forum for a lookie. i hear that 6.7 isn't doing so well!!
No the 6.7 isnt doing that great, its still less in problems then when the 6.0 liter came out though. Luckily for ford the 6.4 turned out to be pretty good, so far!
Whats the horsepower difference on your 7.8 liter compared to the cat 3208?
We run alot of cats in our rigs at work, and they are an ok engine. They dont have alot of power or anything though, but all in all they are decent. We have the 3406's.
While both engines are rated at 210 the 7.8 has a turbo, is a lot quieter and better low end power. The Cat likes 2,000 + rpm to do the same job while the Ford does it @ 1,500 rpm with seemingly less strain.
Ohh I see. They all do pull at different rpms. And for different types of driving, it seems like one brand is better. The n14 cummins in our one truck is one of the best off road trucks we have. I have also driven a volvo? (I think it was a volvo) with a 60 series detroit that was really slick on the highway.
We also have a 550 cat that does pretty good on the highway, but its nothing too special off road.
Most Diesel V8's need to rev a little higher to get to their optimum torque curve. I operate my tractor at about 2500-2700 with the 3208 in it. My neigbor with the N11 cummins operates his tractor at about 1800 rpms.
It's an 1805 Massey Fergusson 4 wheel drive. I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago, wasn't sure about it when I bought it but it has turned out to be a real good tractor and it just has over 3000 hrs on it. and with the 60 hrs a spring I put on to seed, I will be 65 before it hits 4000hrs.
