Guys, help educate me on what is out there for rear axle lockers for the 8.8.
I know I have the option of finding a clean factory LS axle in a junkyard, but I was more looking for the cost and who's done it of a true locker, that can be activated from the driver's seat when it's needed.
I know others have opinions, was just hoping to get them here in one list.
ARB has one for the Ranger 8.8 PN RD82 for the 28 spline.
For some reason I did not realize it was an 8.8 in a Ranger.
Okay, I did not notice this post was in the Ranger forum.
Sorry for the mis-que, I know that ARBs are great too, plus you can use the compressor for other things too.
If you go with the air locker (and they are fine products), be sure to shield the air lines and secure them safely, otherwise you will be out roading one day and find yourself with a cut line.
I'm more interested in this for my 2wd street truck. I have run into some simple issues with the camper on a wet grass incline, and literally needed 4 people pushing with ~700 lbs hitch weight in the bed.
Also in winter driving, I've run into hills around here where you get stopped at a signal, and one side is on an ice patch, and the open dif is a no go.
If it's close to $800 for the kit alone, I will probably just look for a low mileage LS 4.10 rear and swap the whole unit. Maybe try and get a mountaineer/explorer unit with disks out back too.
the good thing about the Stock LSD is if you can find a decent shape one that might have the clutches worn out, $80 will buy you a rebuild kit for the 8.8.
I wonder if my 96 has LS diffs or just LS rear. I did the spin the wheels off the ground thing and the wheels went in opposite directions.
I'll get some tag numbers and see what my rear end has..
Maybe a Lincoln Locker might work for me, well actually it will be a Miller locker.
Front differentials are RARELY LS. They sometimes have lockers, but that's about it.
The last factory LS fronts I had were in a special order 1988 F150 that I bought/ordered. I liked the factory front LS(clutch pack type), because it lasted a long time.
AND it work very well off road. As soon as I can save 2600 bucks, my FSB will get front Det TT and a rear Det Locker with 4.56s.
Not if its a FX4 Level II Zack!!! My Level II has a 31 spline 8.8 with the Torsen LSD.
I sat there thinking to myself "hey...chances are he doesn't have an FX4 Level 2 or he woulda mentioned it, so it's all gravy to generally say they have 28 splines."
