Quick story: I apparently got some dirt/junk in my fuel tank recently -- I was driving in to work this morning and the truck suddenly lost power and would barely make any boost. Check engine light came on a day or two ago, but I haven't had time to go find someone to read the codes. I pulled off the tollway and got lucky -- that particular exit had an O'Reillys Auto Part right there, so I whipped into the parking lot. I thought maybe I might get lucky again and they'd have a code reader, but no dice. Back out to the truck...
Started it back up and still running crappy. Shoot. Then it dawned on me to bend down and look at the filter I put in place when I did my in-tank mods. I used one of those clear gasser types and I saw it plugged pretty solid and starting to collapse. Went back in bought the same filter, a set of screwdrivers (needed a new set anyway ) and a roll of shop towels. After a slight bath in fuel, and a about 20 minutes, I was done. Truck back up & running. I hope they don't mind the little puddles of diesel I left...
So now I'm adding another one of those filters and a screwdriver to the emergency repair kit. I kept the filter, but I didn't have time to get any pics just yet. I'll post some up here shortly. I'm just *REALLY* glad I did the in-tank mods when I did. I would've been looking at a plugged mixing chamber at least, and maybe a mucked up fuel pump, too. If you're putting off the Hutch, don't wait any longer...
the more posts I read like this the more that Hutch seems like the next logical thing to do mod wise. I think I'll just buy the kit from ITP.
well worth the time and cash to do it...
glad it was easy and a quick fix Joe..your lucky... it was 10* and snowing here this morning..that would have been cold changing a filter and messing with fuel...
I want to do the hutch mod with mine also. I always carry an extra filter, oil, de gel and tools with my truck. And also a spare CPS in the glove box. I am a long ways from help most of the time so I try to be prepared.

Absolutely worth it -- I went with the non-filter version (it's only about $40 without the extra filter) and put in that clear gasser filter I mentioned. I don't know if O'Reillys carrys the type of spin-on filter that Dennis sells with the kit or not, but I was happy to see they carried the little cheap-o one I used. I'm still out in the company vehicle right now, but I'll snap a couple pics of the little filter that saved my butt when I get home.
Oh, and I'm a wuss -- it was getting windy due to that front that was coming through this morning, so 45* with a wind was enough to make me hate it under there... I prefer beach sand & palm trees to snow & 10* wind. The sooner I get my buns back in FL, the better.
I just did the in-tank mods this weekend. Pleased already. I had a slight skip at idle before and it seems to be gone. Runs smooth as silk and is quieter. I did the hutch WITHOUT the filter, I thought it would be okay since I didn't remove a filter when I chucked the mixing chamber. I think I have less than $20 in the whole thing. I got 10 feet of hose, but only needed about 5 feet and the rest was on the 3 ft of stainless line, which I only needed half of that. Izzy, what kind of filter did you add to yours? Looks like I'd better add one, but I'm trying to do it on a budget.

The filter I put in is just a $4 cheap-o from Wal-Mart, and now I know O'Reillys has it too. Here's what it looked like before it got all plugged up:
Attached is what it looks like now (sorry for the bad pic, I just snapped a quick pic with my phone).
