Hey everybody , I had used this fourm awhile back when i was having troubles with my 1997 exp, since then its been running great with no problems at all . Well that all changed a week ago. the check engine light finally came on after a day of running rough . went to autozone and scanned for codes . Came back with cyl. 4 misfire. thought ok! same sort of problem as before , I'll just replace the wire and plug and all would be great .NOPE no such luck . I figured might as well replace all the plugs and wires since i had a new set from the last time . still the same problem . still get the same code . my question is am i missing something because it hasnt been 8 months since i changed the plugs and wires. I run 91 gas ( company pays for it) it gets syn. oil every 6000 miles . Its my truck but the company i work for pays for oil and gas .I use autolite plugs and the wires werent the cheap one but not the top of the line . any help in getting it running right again would be great . thanks again PAUL
Sounds to me like a coil Pack. is it a 5.4 or 4.6? I'm guessing if you changed the plugs it's a 4.6. the Packs are about 50 bucks each at auto zone, there are 2. I would change them both, I one is failing the other is not far behind.
its an 4.6 , I had changed the coil packs the last time with autozones brand , didnt get to do anything to my truck this weekend as most the shops are closed or leaving for the new year , so i didnt want to tear into it until i knew that i could get parts . is there a way to test the packs .?????? thanks again

Glad to have found this thread. My '97 Expy started running rough yesterday and the Check Engine light came on today. Plugs only have 40k on them, so it's probably the coil packs. I'm surprised, but Autozone says they are open tomorrow, so I'll get the codes scanned tomorrow.
You folks give me just the info I need. Thanks so much! I truly am a rookie.
Hey everyone , just got my exp. out of the shop and believe it or not it still is running the same , This is what the mechanic told my why: seems that my alt. is going out , ok . Well the noise that its making is causing the knock sensor to advance or retard my timing. dont know how this would cause a code for a misfire on cyl. 4 , the noise has been there since i bought the exp about 2 years now. never gave it a second thought since its been in the shop before and nobody has said anything about the noise . I had the plugs changed and injectors cleaned , new fuel filter ( old one had about 10000 miles on it ).mas air cleaned. Plug wires were less then 1 year old and they said they didnt need replacing , there the ones that put them on , the only thing i havent changed yet is the coil packs . anybody know how to test them other then replacing them , well thanks again
Why don't you swap the misifiring coil pack with a good one - say to the #1 slot - to make it easier to change, and see if the misfire moves to #1. If so, then you definitely know what the problem is. If not, then I don't know what else it could be. I had the misfire problem on my '98 Expy and verified/fixed the problem with a new coil pack. Good luck.
My expedition is an 97 it doesnt have cop's. I was going to try swapping the packs to see if the misfire moves to the other side. but work has been heavy and i havent had much time to do anything , maybe this weekend thou!!!
