Any one have any issues with theirs? '04 F150 XLT with 32,XXX miles. Took it into shop for a loud high pitched whining noise. Just wondering if anyone has had this issue also. And what else should I expect?

I do not know if the '04 is the same as the '07, but my owner's manual says that when switching to 4x4 HI there is a hi pitched whine while the differential is engaging the transfer case.
Hope this helps, but I wouldn't know why it is whining unless it is trying to go into 4x4 for some reason.
There are several things that have to engage to make the 4WD work. The transfer case has a shift motor on it (unless you have the MSOF) and the IWEs have vacuum actuated solenoids. From your description it is hard to tell what it may be. Best bet is take it in and let the dealership have look.
gmcretz: The $x4 is not being engaged. It is in normal driving conditions when I hear it. Word from the dealership is the differential actuator and of course the part is on backorder.
Well on my 2004 F150, the Ford dealer discovered one of the sensors was out causing one of the two front wheels to stay engaged instead of disengaging them both. Once the switch was replaced, gas mileage improved, running in two wheel most of the time instead of 3 wheel drive. Duh....
Don't know what caused the problem, just premature part failure because I did not utilize 4x4 that much. Maybe I did not use it enough, and the switch froze up. Hard to tell but you may be having a problem in that manner as well. Take it to Ford. Mine had about 50M miles on it when they discovered it.
