Ok, I think I follow what your saying but don't know how to get to the command prompt.

F2 gives me a Phoenix BIOS Setup utility with screens named
Info Main Advanced Security Boot Exit

F8 & F4 gives me
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Enable boot logging
Enable VGA mode
Last known good configuration
Directory Services restore mode
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start windows normally
Reboot
Return to OS choices menu

F12 gives me Boot menu
1 +HDD
2 CD/DVD
3 FDD
4 LAN

None of the other F keys do anything. Do I need to insert the recovery cd to get to the command prompt or am I missing something? I got to the command prompt earlier today but can't remember how I did it.

Found the A prompt by inserting the recovery cd and selecting cancel. The commands you suggested came back with "Bad command or file name" If I try for a c prompt it says "Invalid drive specification"

chris I'm sorry. You dont have to change your boot if booting from a floppy. Make your self a 98 setup disc or a dos by down loading the exe. of either one of them. I was still hung up on the repair console on the setup disc when I said go to the boot menu.

This is making me wonder. How did you get a A:\ prompt from the cd drive. A:\ is usually the floppy drive.
Are you booting into the recovery cd? Meaning changing your boot in the boot menu to boot to a cd. If you run the cd with out booting to it you can see some of the menu but I dont remember any of it usuable. This would be better if you could get into the repair console.
But as I said if you go and make a boot disc either a dos or win98 set up disc this will work just fine.
theres 2 reasons for this:
1) you cant get into windows, and restore is'nt working.
2) you cant repair the system folder while in windows cause the cpu has that file locked. So booting into a "dos" console leaves the file unlocked allowing use to manually restore a back up of the file. You can copy, delete, or move etc, any file in that partition using command line consoles if you know them.
I'm sure you already know this.

Paste this into your address bar and the download for win98se bootdisc will start. Once downloaded all you have to do is open the zip files put a floppy in the floppy drive double click the exe. file and it will do it for you.

Hmmm if this still does'nt work for you. Do this put in your recovery cd go ahead and press enter to install windows here you should have 2 options for a clean install or a repair. Type r for the repair. This just installs the system folders you will still have any data you had before.

I have no idea where the A: came from since there isn't even a floppy on the computer. Since the contents of the entire C drive have already been backed up, I haven't been worried about losing anything.

My recovery cd does not give me the repair option, just a friendly little note that it is about to reformat my hard drive and I will lose all data. Wiping the hard drive and reinstalling windows works for a very brief time but the computer is slow and I get the same error message on the 2nd or 3rd reboot. The last time I decided to run a scan disk after the windows install and it found errors but always hung up and could not complete the check or repair.

I think I'm just going to find an el cheapo HDD to put in there and use it as a spare to run the AE scanner software I'm going to buy. I went out today and got a new laptop so problem solved for now.

Thanks for all your help.
