Hey guys. I am new to this forum and so far I think its awesome! But, I have been reading for a couple of hours and haven't seen what I was looking for. Problem is my 03 SD 6.0 seems to have lost its power steering. Seems to steer ok when on the hiway. Get into a parking lot and then try to get out after it fills up? Virtually no power steering at all. Is there a history with steering pump problems? I have a 6" lift running 33" tires but I don't remember a problem with steering until about 6 months ago. It absolutly won't steer sitting still. HELP!
The same pump that provides power for the steering also provides boost for the brakes. Turning the front wheels while you have your foot on the brake will certainly tax a weak pump. Are the tires under-inflated? Also, with your 6" lift, I assume that you used a drop pitman arm and track bar mount so that your steering geometry remained close to where it was unlifted. You might also look at www.ford-trucks.com.com as well. Lots of Super Duty experts there.
Try changing out your fluid first. The fluid can go bad over time and not work as well. If that does not fix the problem than you probably are going to be looking at replacing the pump. There are a few threads on here that talk about aftermarket pumps that are supposed to be stronger than the stock Ford one which will help on your lifted truck.
