Hi everyone. I've got an '89 bronco with the 300 and 5 speed. The aluminum bracket that mounts under the dash to hold the brake and clutch pedals in place recently broke. I've got a new one I bought from LMC, but I can't figure out exactly how much I'm going to have to take out of my truck to get the old one out. I've got it completely unbolted but there is not enough room under there to pull it out and it's looking like I'm going to have to remove the steering column and possibly the dash. I was just wondering if someone has had to do this before and how far I need to go on this. Also, how exactly should I go about pulling the steering column out?
Not sure if a Bronco is the same but to remove the steering column on a F150 here is the procedure.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Inside the vehicle, remove the nuts at the base of the steering column at the firewall.
Remove the two bolts holding the column to the dash.
Lower the column and let the steering wheel rest on the seat.
Disconnect the wires from the ignition switch.
Pull the steering column from the vehicle.
Note if you look under the hood, at the end of the the steering column is a square slip shaft that slides into another shaft that is connected to the steering gear box. When the two shafts seperate. sometimes the black plastic spline that takes up the slack between the two shafts stays with the steering column shaft.
So when you reinstall the steering column make sure the black plastic spline isn't pushed up into the shaft. It should slide over the lower shaft. A rubber grommet keeps the spline from falling down on the lower shaft.
thanks for the info F150. I'm gonna try pulling the column tomorrow to see if I can get this bracket replaced. Have you ever noticed how many procedures begin with, "disconnect the negative battery cable"? How's the weather out there in Baltimore? I used to live out there in Hagerstown, I remember it used to get pretty rough just about this time of year.
