headers vs manifolds

alright, this thread could go on for years.

my F150 has the typical exhaust leak and vice just trying to replace the studs/nuts (and i'm sure the gaskets) I figured i'd replace the manifolds.

she has 99k on the clock, a few mods, but I'm not looking for, nor expecting real performance gains.

do i hit the $90/bank manifolds or go for headers?

I think the chrome or blah blah blah "these look great" are a waste of money because even with the hood open, you really can't see them.

guess I'm looking for quality that will last without breaking the bank!

thanks,
Rob

I would go for headers, They may cost more, but they last longer, and do give a little more power. If you are going to stick with the stock exhaust, get shorty headers that are smog legal. That way they just bolt right in, and you don't have to modify your vehicle. As far as brands, JBAs are good, I'm sure everyone has their preferences. You don't need chrome, though you will probably want to stick with stainless steel.

I would go with a set of headers. You can get a set of cheapie ebay headers for under $200. Several guys in the V10 forum put ebay headers on their V10s with success. Most needed to enlarge th holes in the header and the fit wasn't as good as the high dollar headers on the market, but they fit and work. Headers use bolts instead of studs which won't break as easy as the studs and cost less.

I put a set of Thorley headers and y-pipe ($960 shipped) on my 04' 6.8l after seeing 6 studs break on my dads 03' 6.8l. I knew you had a 5.4l before looking at your sig. My truck only had 27k on it and it had a broken stud.

Honestly I would looked into JBA raw 409 stainless headers for your 5.4l. They produce good power and are engineered to fit well.

thanks for the advice and link....any idea how the hardware is? I see some sites that recommend you get "such and such studs/gasket, etc" for those headers....

check this out, is this the same?

http://www.performancecenter.com/product.page/Exhaust+%26+Headers/Headers/0/0/JBA/JBA1679S/Ford/2001/F-150/5.4L

Also, will i have to drop the front driveshaft??? The below is from JBA's instruction sheet....

"From underneath the vehicle, loosen the bolts connecting the exhaust system to the exhaust manifolds (On 4X4 models, disconnect the front drive shaft by removing the 4 bolts on the companion flange, and let the drive shaft hang out of the way.)"

Pretty much all headers come with bolts and gaskets for the install. I'm positive the JBAs come with Bolts and gaskets. Your 5.4l should take M8x1.25 bolts like my 6.8l did. My Thorleys came with Gr. 8 bolts and star lock washers, so far they are staying tight.

The link I posted is from Autoanything, they are pretty much the cheapest around. Autoanything includes S&H in the price. Also type in "FTEDEAL" when you order and you get an extra $20 off a $200+ purchase. Find out what the other place charges for S&H. Thorley charged me like $60 to UPS my headers.

My driveshaft didn't have to be dropped on my F-250 to install the headers and I doubt you will have to drop it either. You will have to remove the front inner fender liners to get to the manifolds.

i think i'll get the JBA s/s headers.
what do they mean by "no EGR" and "EGR" ???? does that mean it comes with a new EGR or just able to reinstall my old one?
anyone know if the bolts and gaskets are quality?

thinking about getting this bolt set instead

FTEDEAL
We're sorry, but we didn't recognize the promotional coupon code you entered. Perhaps you typed it incorrectly or you’re trying to use a code that's not valid for your items.

This is off the sig of one of autoanythings sponsors posts.
Use the coupon code FTEDEAL in our shopping cart and get $20 off orders over $199

I would use the bolts and gaskets with the kit. Header kits like Thorley, JBA and etc usually come with gr 8 bolts and the gaskets are good also. You will have to retorque the headers bolts from time to time until the gaskets stops compressing. I had the bolts retightened on my headers once and there is no leaks. You will be able to hear a leak.

It means the header includes the EGR port so it will be able to reuse the old one. Without it, you have to modify the vehicle to eliminate the EGR. Only get the non-ERG models for race vehicles.

Forgot to anwer the EGR question. Like Bear River said its just a bung to hook up you current EGR lines to. I don't like EGR, glad I don't have it on my 6.8l.
