Can after market a/c be installed on the Y-Blocks. I have a '54 f-100 with I believe a '57 292 that has been stroked. It gets pretty hot in the cab when traveling 500+ miles to Knoxville and other shows. I know I have seen other trucks with a/c. My question is how the performance is effected. Thanks.
Hot rod air and vintage air both carry brackets to mount ac pumps to the 292. I know that they make kits that require very little modification to the vehicle. As far as the performance i could not tell u because i have not seen one or talked to anyone who has used them on thier vehicles.
I have a 56 sedan with a 312 with vintage air unit. Works good, no performance issues but I did add a fan shroud and 6 blade fan to keep the engine cool. I was goign to add an idle solinod to pick up the idle when the A/C was on but nover did it since the engine idles at 700/800 rpm (cam) so didn't need to increase it. I used the Vintage air brackets which result in the A/C compressor mounted where the generator was and had to switch to an alternator mounted above the compressor in front of the right head. One belt runs everything. Debating whether to add A/C on my 64 SW PU with a 292. Probably will not since we seldom use the A/C in the 56.
I am in process of putting AC on our 292. It is from Classic Auto. Here is the compressor and alternator set up. The radiator is obviously not back in yet.
