im thinking about buying a 2003 ford f-250 6.0 diesel this is my first diesel. how do i know right away if the diesel is running good or if theres a problem thanks.
Get the VIN and do an Oasis report. It'll show Ford maintainance and warranty work. That right there could give you a lot of info on the truck. Keep asking questions here if you're not sure. There's a lot of info at hand so don't hessitate to ask.

If you can swing it, buy a 2005 or newer. I had a 2004 and it was in the shop more than on the road. 2003-2004 have had several problems with them.
However there are alot of '03-'04s that don't have any problems at all. I bought mine with 127k on it, figured with that many miles it must be a good one and a good Oasis report confirmed that. Do the Oasis report then go from there. Good luck!
I agree with D8chumley! I bought my 03 last Feb, I've put about 23K miles on it since and (outside of warped front rotors and a dash console replacement) I've had NO problems with it! I kept my 150 when I bought this truck....the 150 gets used only on weekends now (mostly to keep it up) the 250 gets better milage and is a fantastic ride.
That OASIS report should be part of your buy or no-buy decision.
