Bought an '88 F150 4x4 yesterday and maybe should have checked it out a bit more before I bought it.
It's a 302 EFI, 128k miles, automatic (AOD) and has a manual lever for the transfer case.
It shifts from 2-Hi to 4-Hi , but I can not shift to neutral or 4-Low.
I'm on level ground, tranny is in neutral,,,,no go!. I hope that it may be the linkage need to be lubercated, but I wanted to pass it by you all first.
4-Hi works great, but I wil need 4-Low to pull loads of firewood up from the bottom of my property, some parts of the trails are pretty steep.
Any ideas?????
I contacted the guy I bought it from to see if he had the same problem, he stated that he never used 4-Low, had no need too, and never tried it.
Thanks

That's probly what it is then....use it or lose it....get under there and spray her down good with some lube....PB Blaster WD-40 or whatever.....hopefully that's all it is......if you're worried about it while you're yanking on the lever......you could crawl under there and disconnect the linkage and shift it manually...that way it'll clear up the possibility of having more problems than frozen linkage....Luck
I broke that shifter one year snow plowing. This is how I get mine into 4 low. I have to go from park to neutral a few times then go into low. Sometimes if it doesnt still want to go in, ill let of the brakes and it will go in. That shifter was like 150 from ford.
MIne was hard going to low as well, I just spayed it with lube and kept working the lever, now its fairly smooth. I rarely use low but put it in at least once a month to keep it free.
After two weeks of religiously soaking the linkage and paitently working the shifter every day for about 5 mins, she finally went into nuteral and low!
Now, Where can I get a TV (Kickdown) cable for an AOD trans. It is discontinued by Ford. Green Sales said it's a dead part, no-one has it.
Uhhhh actually where are you at I think my buddy has one...he converted from a aod to a NP435 when he convered his truck to 4x4...lemme give him a holler and I'll get back with ya.......Later
