Trying to get to the bottom of a very loud ringing when the truck is idled after driving w/ the new downpipe. The ringing lasts about 30-45 secs then is gone. No rubbing anywhere. So i am going to start with the downpipe and the turbo connection. Does this look right? Does everything look peachy? Does it need to be pulled up more towards the turbo? Im a worry wart!!
Looks good from this perspective. As long as you have both lips meeting and within the V, you should be fine. I found with mine that if I tighten it up a bit, then rotate the up-pipe from below, tighten, rotate, tighten, etc... it helps to ensure its mated well and not bound.
When I installed mine, there really wasn't much room for error since it uses the v-band clamp. The flange can only fit together flush and the clamp still work properly, so that makes it kind of idiot proof.
The only real adjustment is in "clocking" the pipe left or right to provide clearance between the engine block and the firewall / floor board of the cab.
When you say "ringing" do you mean like some one struck a hollow pipe sort of ring or are you actually hearing the turbo whistling?
After i put my 4" down-pipe on, i noticed i could hear the turbo "cycle" when idling. that is, i hear it quietly start to whistle a little and hold it for a 10-15 seconds, then drop back off until it is silenced. then, and i'm not sure how long, in a little while it will do that again.
when my wife got in the truck for the first time, i took off and the turbo whistled nice and loud and my wife says, "is it going to do that every time?" I said, "I hope so!"
I think I know the ringing you are talking about....mine currently has it. I just had a MBRP TB system installed (with the 3.5" down pipe). Teh ringing sounds like it is coming from the dash. On mine, I think the down pipe just needs to be adjusted a bit. They had to bend a flange at the fire wall to get things to clear. And even with that, it is still close to the fire wall and the frame/bar that the transmission sits on.
I had a TB system on my 04 and didn't seem to have any problems. Not sure why this one is being more difficult. But the shop did say that I might need to come back in after driving it awhile to have things tightened up (due to expansion and contraction as things heat up and cool down).
I will say, I am wondering if I should have just left the stock DP in and just down a cat back. Not sure if the aftermarket down pipe is worth the extra hassel and money.
i installed the MBRP turbo-back kit with the 4" down-pipe. it was hard getting the original off, but the 4" fit with no modifications to truck or pipe. i'm driving a 2003 6.0psd.
