Talking 460 mods....again

Im sure this is already beat to death....but Im playing with my first carb motor...always had EFI..

Ive got the 460 in my truck.....everything is stock....also have C6 tranny

What kind of timing can I run?

If I put just an edelbrock performer intake..and some headers on the 460 what size carb should I go with?
I was looking at a road demon 725 w/ electric choke???? Is that too much???

any other hints are helpful...

What kind of cam is in it? I would say a 650 double pumper holley on that would be nice. If you get a bigger cam then u can go in the 7's

Man if ya wanna get the most timing out of the motor before it starts to ping. Find a hill. Run up it in a low gear at full throttle at say 2000rpm. Lug it.

Go back down. Turn the distributor a little farther. Run up the hill under WOT at low rpm's. No pinging? a little farther.

Keep going to it pings and back it off. Then go one more time up the hill to make sure your not pinging anymore.

Heres my 2 cents on carb sizing. Now since you have a dual plane intake on your rig im assuming. You did say perfromer. Think about it.....

You just divided half the motor into 2 intakes. so say you want a 650, you got a 325cfm carb per side of the motor. Thats a tad small for your app. I would say at least a 670cfm if you want the most out of the current engine setup.

I dont think a 750 would be out of the question, but thats a little big. A 725 I think is a good choice. But a cam swap would wake that big block right up.....

My 351 windsor I built is using a 600cfm right now. It wants WAY more. Since I have a dual plane, my motor per side has 300cfm.

Granted I got a big cam, ported heads, and really good exhaust. Plus a stroker kit. But dont go all crazy on the carb size.

You know the saying, bigger isnt always better.

So I would say a 7's size carb is a good idea, it allows you to upgrade further down the road and your gunna get a good kick in power. So I say i'd say go for it.

I run Edelbrock and I am soundly dissapointed at the help lines and there product doesnt act very consistently. I have a 1407 (750) Edelbrock at home Im going to try just for kicks. The 1406 (600) is NOTHING but problems. Search the forums, there everywhere. And it seems like no amount of tuning can get it right.

I will try the 750 and see how it goes. I know its too much carb, but the heck I got it for $35 and its brand new!

I looked at that demon carb. I think you will be VERY happy with it. Plus it looks alot cooler , You can go ahead with the Demon but Ill try that carb some time this week if you want an opinion on it.

I still say that Demon is the way to go. They can be upgraded, tuned and assembled much easier then the Edelbrocks seem to do.

Octane of your gas will make a difference. If you run the high $ premium, you can run more timing. If saving at the pump is a priority, run 89 octane and run a little less timing.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

Put the timing chain from a '69 Ford 429. That in itself will give you 30hp and 35ft-lbs of torque.

I asked the same question when my mechanic suggested the swap, and I don't rightly know how it changes anything. It was verified with the software they were using and the dyno after the swap was complete.

The timing chain controls the cam timing. The 69 timing chain will advance the cam timing by I think 6 degrees due to the newer 460 timing chains having the cam retarded to help with emissions. Cam timing controls how the valves operate and therefore control how the motor will perform.
