Hey guys. I broke a leaf, now my truck is sitting lopsided. I aint replacing it till I get home again, then I will be putting a set of Deavers in the back.
Who in here has broken a leaf in their pack before? What were you doing to it when it broke? Just curious.
I had one broken on either side. Didn't notice 'til I had it up on a lift doing the rusted leaking tanks. Had a spring shop replace the two with heavier "RV" springs (whatever that means). They just replaced the individual springs, not the entire pack. Not sure how or when they broke. Probably when I was at Silver Lake sand dunes.
my overload is broke in half, i found it when i took the fire truck bed off. it probly broke on a fire call by bottoming out real hard. i know that happened because that has happened when i drove it at a fire..there is a new spring shop about 30 miles from me that is supposidly one of the largest spring mfg's in the states. i do not know if they sell to the public or not. i am going to call one day as soon as they get a number. but being as large as they say they are they prob. just sell to mfg's.
I am guessing what did mine is was driving down into a ditch and hitting bottom pretty hard as I drove up the other side. I didn't fall asleep or anything, just needed to get over there.
I had a leaf broken on the right rear. Went to a local shop that specializes in leaf spring repair (www.pointspring.com) and they fixed it in an hour for around $100.
My only broken leaf spring experience was with my 82 F100.
I ramped a set of railroad tracks on a gravel road, basically I launched it off a 4 foot ramp going 60 mph. I landed hard flat on all 4 tires, and my right rear spring broke. The main leaf was still there but all the others had shattered and flew all across the road. I lost one of my right side axle ubolts, and bent the hell out of the other one.
I ended up crab walking the truck home, the rear tires were tracking a foot to the right of the front tires. I was going forward in the lane, but the truck was a little sideways.
Had several break when I used to drag race a 89 F15 4x4 .
I just take pack apart and replace the broken spring on both sides. Now I add a few (to hold up to the F350 coils I run up front ). I live with in 20 miles of a spring manufacturing plate. But there r 8 (semi) truck repairs places that can order any spring you want. Thats where I get my parts .
I am going to be gone for a year, so my truck wont see the road that often, but when I get back it is getting the long travel treatment. The springs will be replaced with deavers and will pull aprox. 15" of wheel travel in the back.
I cracked the originals and wore out the replacements i put in a year ago just from constantly overloading the truck with firewood, black dirt, rock and hauling chevys. But theres no squatting mine with the heavy duty pack i got in there now.
Seems to be a common problem on worked trucks. I have cracked leaves on several of my trucks, usually half a leaf would fall off. Working on springs is not one of my favorite things to do so I just bring it to a local spring shop. Most of the time its just a matter of replacing the spring pack (all but the top main leaf) and its only in the shop for a day. Ford uses 2.5 inch and 3 inch wide springs and many choices of load ratings. Always check the U bolts and shackles for damage and corrosion.
regards and Happy New Year
