Smile Programmer Dilemmas

If you were thinking about going with a programmer without having to do too many changes to your truck, say a 2006 ford f350, what would be everyones opinion for the best to go with?

From what i have read on this website most people will tell you to go with the SCTXCal2 with tunes from a guy named Matt. They say he's one of if not the best. Do a search on here for tuners and you'll find all kinds of info on all types and tunes.

i was in the same boat you were when i bought my 03 new with 11 miles on it.I wanted a tuner but didnt know what to chose.
I soon had a few friends and customers that bought 6.0Ls and soon they all had a tuner but me i drove in some of the trucks even drove a couple myself i have to say i did see a difference. But iam a procrastinator (spelling?)about stuff like that i always think about the cons and never the pros about stuff like that.So i figured ill wait it out and see.Well iam the only guy out of that bunch to have very very few problems just recall stuff.Everyone else have had headgaskets go one guy a transmission and have all dumped the trucks like a crazy girlfriend. So ive learned if i want my truck to last me a while ill keep it stock and maintain it like i owe it something for getting the job done on a daily basis.

so if your relationship with your truck is going to be short lived and dump her before she starts to cost you some money then tuner up and have fun.
I paid almost 40,000.00 out the door for my 03 crew cab dually FX4 in june of 03and paid it off 11 months ago and really dont want the payments of a new one for a while longer so iam leaving her the way she is and hoping for the best

Good luck to you on what ever choice you make

If they're not crazy, I get bored easily.... From what I've seen most would choose an SCT tuner with custom tunes combined with a low restriction exhaust to drop EGT for improved 1-3 mpg and about +100 ponies for less than 2% the cost of your $50,000 pickup. <---- Simple terms..... Matt from Spartan Diesel Tech is a favorite of many on here. His website can be found in the list of Sponsors to the left of your screen.

The SCT is the best way to go as far as a tuner, but you will want to add a larger exhaust system first so that you won't be building up too much heat from the extra power!

One thing to remember when you choose custom tuning, you do not always have to light your hair on fire. If you want a mild street file or aggressive tow file just ask about it. Custom tuning explains what the vendor is selling, custom to what you want.

I have an SCT from Innovative Diesel. I would recommend this to anyone. As mentioned above, the customs let you specify what you want. I only run two programs - one is a TOW program with aggressive tow haul and turbo braking. This program works well for all my heavy towing needs. The other is just a STREET program thats not nearly as extreme as some guys want to have. This program is awesome for normal driving, with pretty crazy (IMHO) power for outrunning and passing anything you need to and still retain reliability (albeit any mods will probably have some impact on this though!). Both programs have EGR disable and top end limiter removal.
I too put off a purchase for a long time - 'lurking' on some websites because I was leary of damaging my truck. I had a turbo replaced on mine before installing the programs and I am hoping that the turbo braking feature combined with the higher boost may prevent the vanes from seizing again. I also like the ability of changing and upgrading via emails - Eric did a bit of fine tuning on my programs to get them 'just right' for my liking. I am quite certain that any of the SCT custom tuners that have been recommended on here will set you up with what you want as they have all taken the care to ensure customer satisfaction - just do your homework and know what you want and listen for recommendations. Remember, with any power adder, you cant just bag the hell out of your truck and expect longevity!

I think that Maxium4x4 and BobsF350 have covered the points I want to make. My 06 came with lifted headbolts and a leaking HG. It had 34K and my dealship (not the seller of the truck) fixed this under warrenty. I want to keep my crazy girlfriend. I have just ordered the sct-3 tuner WITH lifetime custom tunes (not cheap). I did NOT do this to create 500hp at the rear wheels, I did this because this tuner will address most of issues I want to address with my truck. I LOVE my crazy girlfriend (great analogy BobsF350) and with the ability to custom adjust almost every aspect of her behavior, I think I can get her too sing. The key is CUSTOM tunes. I will make her mine..... SCT was from Santa to me. My opinion only. rc

Some get better milage some don't. Some are tuned at Spartan some are done through Innovative. You can eliminate egr on 05-07 without throwing CELs. Do a search for 03-04s, I think you gotta do sneaky pipes.
