460 noise

I recently bought an 85 F-250 4x4, with a stock 460. There seems to be a noise, and was told by several people, including a Ford mechanic, that it was in the top-end. They thought either a lifter of weak spring. I am preparing to change can, lifters, and springs, and timing chain and gears. I am waiting for parts to come in, but have the intake off, and can see that the cam seems to be "back", the lifters are only riding on 1/3 to 1/2 of the lifter. Any reason for this? Could the cam plate be worn or is there something else I should look for? Thanks.

That's a normal thing, it allows for lifter rotation while the engine is running.

So the lifter doesn't set directly over the top of the cam lobe? Wouldn't that cause the cam lobes to wear on the front really bad?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-16-03 AT 08:34 PM (EST)]Nope! Those cam lobes are pretty tough. These guy's can explain it better than I can.

When the cast core is made at the casting foundry, all the lobes are flame hardened. That process hardens all the lobes to a depth below the barrel of the core. That depth of hardness allows the finish cam grinder to finish grind the cam lobes with a Rockwell hardness above 50Rc. The generally accepted hardness on a finished cast cam should be between 48Rc to 58Rc
