Well I'm finally going to break down and buy a code reader. So what do yous guys think is the best bang for the buck. I'll prolly use the thing once or twice a year but ya never know. In addition to my 04 F150 I have an 86 E350 and an 00 explorer. I own a couple of Toyotas, 05 and 86, and a 95 Saturn too. So what do ya think? Of course I'll need the adapters too along with the code manual(s)
Given the range of vehicles you have, you're going to need a reader which supports OBD I, OBDII and CAN. Equus has a very good 3 standard reader for the DYIer for about $200. Equus INNOVA 3120
Most of your stuff is is OBDII (except the E350 and Saturn).
I'm in San Diego too and just recently picked up an Actron OBDII scanner for $40 after rebates from Pep Boys. It's pretty basic (no live data) but does all I need to read codes and clear them. If you are just looking for a reader I would keep an eye on their sales. They usually have one pretty cheap on sale. I've used it so far on a '97 F-150, '99 Plymouth Voyager, '01 GMC 2500 and an '03 F-250 diesel.
Like I said it works great for basic functions and was worth the $40 to have handy.
Thanks all. I just spoke to a mechanic at a shop I was in yesterday. He said he uses his $100.00 INNOVA more than he does his $5,000.00 reader. I pretty much already planned on getting one that does OBD I, OBDII, and CAN. I am just trying to avoid over kill.
