HEY ALL. Has anyone ever fried there injector driver. Its located behind the left fr qtr panel. my truck stalled today heading to work. it had all the classic symptoms of a failing cps. After a 120 dollar tow 2 cps,s 1 used 1 new no luck. The truck would run 4 a min or 2 then die.ckecked codes none were set. Only thing i noticed is a burnt smell from the qtr panel.Note injector driver was replaced 3 or 4 months ago [accident].
I would deffanently look into it. If the truck was hit bad enough to wreck the idm you may have some wires in the harness that got pinch and are now starting to short out. Pull the harness out of the fender and unwrap it. Check for any chaffing on the wires. Hope this helps Lance
Mine just went out on my early 99. Which turned into a complete mess. Found out the pcm's memory was fried, so it wouldn't store codes. So I replaced the PCM, and got a bad IDM code. Replaced the IDM with a used one from a scrapyard, which supposedly came out of a running truck. That one was totally f'ed up. It was putting out 111 volts to the injectors, so it fried all of them. So I got to buy another IDM, which was new this time, and 8 stage 1 injectors from Industrial Injection. Most expensive christmas ever.

Hmmm. What kind of voltage were you expecting? IIANM, modified IDMs boost the voltage to the injectors. Hmmmm. I may be wrong but I don't think that IDM fried your injectors. If I am wrong, someone please school me.
I agree. The IDM should put out 110v stock, with the fairly common IDM mod doing 140v. (havn't done it personally, but that's what I've read)
This link was in a thread recently, don't remember who originally posted it. http://www.forgotton.net/diesel/idmmod/index.htm
Even with the right voltage, I'm sure the IDM could still take out injectors, though.
No luck yet.I pullrd the idm out to ck all the wires they looked good. i did a injector buzz tast with a mac tool scanner it passed, all 8 injectors buzzed. But now the scanner sayes there is a bad connection between it and the pcm.Looks like ive got e bad wire or ground somewere. Well not much daylight left ill go back to looking. hate 2 send it to the stealership.thanks
Make sure the 10 mm bolt is tight on the wire harness that plugs into the PCM. Get a 1/4 rachett in there, I know its tight, but maybe the repair shop had it loosened and forgot to tighten it.
DSMfan....the early 99 have a different IDM..when I asked around about up grading my injectors to a 99.5..I was told both IDM and PCM had to be replaced with the 99.5-03 at the same time as the injectors for it to work on the early 99...that's probably why she fried on ya..

Well no luck yet. last night i noticed the fuel pump was not running, i drained the fuel bowl then turned on the ignition no fule flow.So this am i jumped the fuel pump and it pumped like it should, even tried starting the truck with the pump jumped no fire. With everything ive tested and tried and the way things have been deteiorating im looking at buying a pcm. Im out of answers, just left with a lot of ?. thanks 2 all that helped.
No fuel pump sounds like a fuse. Check the large fuses under the hood. I think the pcm fuse is #30.but not sure. Check the all to be safe. Try unplugging the fuel heater in the bottom of the filter housing. The plug is at the back side. Its been known to short and pop the fuse which is also the fuse for the pcm!
Well ckecked all the grounds i could find and installed a new pcm [$420.00]no luck.Ill check around tomorrow 4 a bad ground or bad wire then ill have to find a mechanic won knows these trucks.
make suretheres no bare wires going up to that big 42 pin connector one the driverside valve cover! they sometimes touch that valve cover and cause problems! just a thought!
After another day searching i did find what looks like could be the culprit. I totally removed the fuse panel, under one of the connectors on the back i found 4 or 5 connector pins corroded [green & ashy] most likely from the windshield leak since the truck was new. I cleaned up everything all nice but it still would not start. There is a circuit board in the fuse panel and i bont know if something is blown on the board. Iguess ill be at the stealership tomorrow , ill be sure to take my KY. thats all 4 today thanks to all that chimed in. Ill keep u informed on my progress.
