300 I6 to play with
i wanna put some gadgets on it.
here's what I want on it:
cams
headers
dual-rear exit 3" exhaust system
4bbl carb
K&N air filter
new spark plugs + distributor
maybe a perf. mod chip
all these things are stuff i heard u can do with a engine....i have no kind of direction on this.
is this possible with the 300?
how much!!!
and is it safe for the engine?
Next, are you in a state that requires emissions testing? If so you need to see if the parts you're looking at putting on are emissions certified, for example putting duals on a rig that started off as a single exhaust from the factory might not pass a "visual" at the emissions testing station.
cams - The cam you use is going to depend on what you are trying to achieve.
headers - is this going to effect any emissions testing you may have to go through? Good for all out horsepower but usually only in the upper RPM range, and a total waste of time/money in my opinion. I would use a split manifold off of a newer 300.
dual-rear exit 3" exhaust system - duals are good and will let your engine breathe better, 2" is fine, you won't need to go to 3" on a 6.
4bbl carb - with a 6 you'll want to stay small around the 390 cfm range, otherwise it will probably be over carbureted.
K&N air filter - good choice, not so much (from my perspective) from a performance standpoint, but good quality, and reuseable.
new spark plugs + distributor - Good quality plugs are always a good move, but you don't have to spend a fortune on gimmicks like Splitfire.
maybe a perf. mod chip - heard a lot of good things about chips, but have no first hand experience with them.
all these things are stuff i
heard u can do with
a engine....i have no kind
of direction on this. - Where you go with this is going to depend on what you want to wind up with.
is this possible with the 300? - Yes it is possible.
how much!!! - Speed is money. How fast do you want to go? Sixes and Big Blocks have their strong suit in torque, Small blocks are in horsepower, but again it's usually in the upper RPM range
and is it safe for the
engine? - That's a matter of opinion, but for the most part there shouldn't be any problem. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that if you throw enough money at it, it will be fast just cause you've got a bunch of brand name aftermarket speed equipment on it. It all has to be engineered together so the components work together instead of fighting each other.
Trail Rider
You have the last effort's on the 300 by Ford. It put's out all it can, and still meet's the Emission's specs. Anything you touch will only make matters worse.
This 460 on the other hand is ready for the Road. There is lots of speed stuff available for it and it still may pass emissions with lots of that stuff installed. Without the speed stuff, it's still very fast, with an amazing amount of pickup.
Keep in mind, the 460 get's 10-11 Mpg, and that cant be made any better. While your 300 get's 12-15.
Talk it over with somebody and let me know. Meanwhile, Dont mess with that engine.
