Emissions Removed Need Help
I just recently became the owner of a 1980 F100 with the 4.9l(300). The body is nearly rust free, just a little over both rear wheel wells, and a bad repair on the drivers cab corner.
Anyway here is my problem, sometime in the past just about all of the emissions junk was removed. Engine has been strong the few weeks that I've had it, but we had a cold spell here last weekend and temps droped down below 40. Engine did not want to start after I stopped to put some gas in, and stalled again shortly after, had same problem with stalling after it had sat for about 3 hours. The only things that seem to be in place is the PCV,Heat to the Air Cleaner, and the vacuum to the distrubitor advance. I suspect that the carb likely needs rebuilt and the choke temp control replaced. Running very rich.
What really should be there to put things back the way they should be? Dealers around be want $100 just to look at it and give me a parts list.
We curently do not have emissisons testing here in Northeast Tennessee. If most junk is left off what really needs to be in place in order to run right?
Any timing changes needed, or anything else?
Need all the help and advice you can give. Thanks.

Be sure it's a 300 Carb and not a 240. The Jet is different, and will burn the Plug's and Valve's if you get a 240.
Second place to look is in the Reference section for the Emissions information. That will tell you what your truck was supposed to have.
I can't for the life of me, understand why people removed that stuff. It worked just fine with it installed. My 81 Bronco had just a few heat related vacuam valves, and the Cat. It got 13-15 mpg and had plenty of power. I pulled a 23' Tolly Craft on a tandem wheel trailer all over Alaska. Did just fine. Had to shift down sometimes but most of it was done in Fourth. I would like to have had an overdrive.
