Hi all, normally on the diesel section but home for the holidays and dad is having a problem with his Explorer,4.0 auto tranny. I drove it myself and the speed doesn't change or the RPMs but it feels like the tranny is slipping in and out of gear. This happens at various speeds. Mass Airflow Sensor cleaned(not replaced), Tranny fluid changed before it is supposed to and it ios on it 2nd tranny.
Thanks for all the help guys .
Hello:
first post on my part, sorry for not doing the formal introduction thing. Don't be so sure its the trans. I just experienced the same thing and it turned out to be an intermittent miss under load. Run a code check but in my case new plugs and wires and all was fine.
If it isn't the plugs or wires, and you still think its the tranny, try Lucas Transmission Fix. It's a great product and is relatively cheap ($10-$15). It helped my 98 Explorer XLT shift like new again at 150,000 miles.
He has replaced the wires and plugs. Its a 92 Explorer 4x4 Eddie Baur with an automatic transmission. He replaced the original with another and now it doesn't matter what speed the transmission acts like it is slipping in and out of gear. The rpm gauge doesn't fluctuate and it doesn't happen when the cruise control is set.
Unless that's mistyped, I wouldn't expect a transmission problem to behave like that. Just about any transmission problem I can think of would show up in the tach. If the tach doesn't fluctuate with the "surging," I wouldn't necessarily be expecting a transmission problem. Does it surge in all transmission positions (1,2,D,OD,R,P/N)?
The connection with the cruise control is interesting. Any chance it's in the throttle plate/cable? TPS? Any vacuum leaks? My '92 had a surging/hesitation that turned out to be a bad FPR: what is your fuel pressure doing?
No mistyping, drove the vehicle myself and it surges, or hesitates in 1, 2, D...R,P/N it doesn't do this. My dad and I agree that with the cruise on it doesn't do it at all is something puzzling. As for the tach, there is no fluctuation while this is happening. As for codes dad is waiting for a mechanic to get free to hook the reader up to and no there are no Idiot lights, flashing OD light or anything when this is happening. Thanks again for all the information so far it haas all been helpful in trying to nail this problem down.
Hello all who have given good advice on this problem. The problem has been fixed, called dad and asked if he got it fixed and he said yes. The remedy surprised me, he took it in hooked it up to the computer and the puter told him the injectors were not working properly. He had the injectors cleaned and with 210,xxx miles on it he is getting 21.5 mpg and he is as happy as a kid with a bucket load of bubble gum. Side not, he also had the convertor taken off and split it in half and he could still see thru it, now he just has a straight pipe to the muffle and out and he loves it.
Again thanks to all who responded with advice to help.
