Do any of you guys have those air horns that come with a small electric air compressor and no storage tank? I was just wondering how well those work, considering getting them. My brother had air horns on his car awhile back but I can't remember if they were that kind or not, but they worked pretty good.
There is a set that you can get for about $70 that have a small electric compressor. No tank required. Nothing like the big train horns everyone here is getting... but they are louder than stock horns. I had a set on a jeep a few years back and loved to mess with people with them...But I found that in the winter the compressor doesn't like to push out the air as easily. I relocated it to the engine bay to help keep it warm and it worked fine. Here is a set that Harbor Freight has..... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95251
I think those are considered novelty horns. I don't see why anyone would opt for those over a true electric horn. real air horns are the way to go.
i mounted my compressor/tank combo behind the backseat. Its a piston compressor, and inhaling dirt and water is not good. I figured its the safest place, and I know when it's running.
Yea they are novelty horns...still louder than stock.....They are funny on a little vehicle like a suzuki sidekick or grand vitara or the like....but the big real air horns are better for our trucks.
I had a compressor fed set of horns on my old K5 Blazer years ago. They worked ok for a year or so then the compressor kind of fell apart. Not worth the money IMO.
I've got a set of Kong MKII train horns from Seige Engineering and man those things are awesome!!! They sound exactly like a freight train. I have them mounted to my frame rails, and they are loud enough to hurt your ears inside the cab I managed to pick mine up on ebay for 108 bucks. You will need a compressor and tank though.
Ill try and take some pics of me setup, and post em.
Cant go wrong with Seige Engineering.
Seige is the BEST. the system i wanted to buy would have been from them. but i designed it to be able to air up tires and run pneumatic tools.
But , I am real happy with the ones my wife bought me for XMAS! Cost a lot less than I was planning too.
As for the compressor falling apart, that's why I mounted mine in the the cab! They can't inhale dirt and/or water. i mounted the horns on the frame (unwillingly).
My truck is a regular cab, but if I could find a small tank I wouldn't mind setting up an onboard air system of some sort with a tank behind the seat.
I might cobble together a system of my own somehow... I really can't afford those big fancy setups, and don't have much of a desire to spend that much money anyway.
Isn't that going to make a lot of noise inside the cab.....? As for the horns being on the frame........sounds like one of the worst places for the horns........lots of dirt and debris always flying around that low....along with water when it rains.

If you can find the space under the hood to mount a set of horns....Please fill us in!! Especially for those of us that have diesels. That compartment is VERY packed. I was thinking at one time to mount to the underside of the hood, but it would be a pain to make sure it sits in a pocket just right as the hood closes..
I just always thought that they should go on the roof of the cab.........yeah, the only horn that will fit under the hood is one with the rubber ball on the end of it(from a bicycle)........
AAACCKK!!!! I don't know about anyone else...But I won't drill holes in the roof for horns....I will mount a rubber ball bicycle horn on the mirror before I drill a hole in the roof. I am looking for a light bar with the right mounts just to avoid putting a hole in my truck. But that is just me.
I to mounted my seige engineering set up onthe frame rails, Iput the tank and compressor in my fifth wheel box. The horns are pretty loud and do scare the kids on the street!
