Well, each to their own............

Kinda like I'll set a Gibson on fire long before I'll ever play it

Fretboard Logic is the standard "music nerd" guitar book. There are three volumes and they will teach you all the theory (from a guitars perpesctive) behind everything. A good book (my personal favorite) is The Progressive Guitarist: Practical Theory for Guitar by Don Latarski. It's based on modes and scales, but the first 15 pages are the absolute easiest way to explain how to start learning to play. It's also easy to find in a store because the cover is bright pink. Easy way to learn acoustic is to get a Beatles or classic rock cover book and just hammer a dozen simple, easy songs into your head.

I play on a Wasburn DC10 acoustic with Elixer Polyweb medium strings. It's got a great bottom end sound to it, and the rosewood fret board really warms up the tone. I play real Texas country and the Beatles, with a few exceptions thrown in here and there.

Get a Dunlop 3mil Stubby pick, and upgrade on the strings cause that's an easy way to make any guitar feel better. Crappy tuners are a personal peeve, so I always replaced them first thing. When you're learning play on several different guitars (having friends or a music store helps) so you can figure out how you like your action, fret size, all that mumbo jumbo. Talk to any guitar tech person to make sure the guitar itself stays in good order, cause that'll **** you off to no end trying to learn on a bad instrument.

MOST IMPORTANT: You ain't gonna be Buddy Holly or Zakk Wilde overnight, so don't quit after a few months of being frustrated. When I first started I would use my left hand to move my fingers into chord shapes then hit the strings as hard as I could. And take the time to learn at least some of the theory behind the guitar, because it makes learning then memorizing complete songs a lot easier when you know whats going on. Kinda like knowing how and why an engine runs before you try to rebuild one.

If you want to play country and rock, especially stuff out of the 70's, or even music like the crappy punk rock of today, all you have to do is learn 3 power chords and you could play quite a few songs! For example, Smoke on the Water, or All the Small Things by Blink 182. If you want to play solos, or do some finger picking, then you'll have to get a good book and practice during your free time. But if you don't have the patience or are tone deaf, you'll probably just want to stick with the 3 power chords method.

All the scales and chords you can cram into your skull at first man.

I DO NOT recommend learning more then one song at once. Once you pick up a few things you will try to play a ton of things at once and you will give your brain an overload. Try to learn basic scales and chords and then pick a song centered around the first 3 or 4 chords you learn. Learn it completely, then move on to another song.

Here's my acoustic.

Good luck and happy strumming!

i play the acoustic/electric version of that, it's a great unit.

anyways, i have the same taste as the original poster... mostly country with some rock. for alot of country, especially modern stuff, once you can play the G, D, E minor, C, and A chords, you've opened the door to aloooooot of songs (even beyond the country genre, really). if you have an ear for strum patterns, you can darn near play most songs on the radio if you use a capo to tune up when neccesary.

good luck... once you get those few chords down and can change between them effectively, that first song you figure out is very rewarding.

and ultimate-guitar.com for some music along with cowboylyrics.com

I tried to learn about 1-2 years ago and never put the time into it... now that im in college im still not great, but am learning alot of chords and can play somethin, it just wont sound great as i know no theory...

but learn chords... i started with Em, C,D,G,A and expanded to Am, B, Bm,F,Fm,F#,F#m, and a few others.

countrytabs.com Free signup, and LOTS of actually good tabs. Most of the Texas Country singer/songwriters have songs up, tabbed by people who either know them or seen them live up close, and these are the easiest type of country to learn. Look up Casey Donahew or Wade Bowen.

Find someone that knows guitar and just hang out and play guitar together. I learned a bunch from a buddy of mine. I've got a Telecaster and he's got....lucky bugger....a Gibson SG.
