Rear Posi? Or Locker

I have a 79 f150 4x4.
Have 9-in rear. I would like to do better offroad. Mud, snow and hill climbing. Not so much rock climbing. Thinking of a posi or limited slip. What is the prefered way to go? Any idea of cost to have a limited slip installed? Please advise sugestions..
Thanks,
Troy

Well if you want a limited slip go to the junkyard, pull a 9in third member with the same spline count and gear ratio as yours and install. If you want a locker you will need to order that then have your ring gear installed on the carrier and the pattern needs to be reset.

mud=locker or l/s
snow=l/s lockers suck in the snow
hills=locker or l/s
street=l/s
rocks=locker
If you rarely go offroading I would say a l/s, if you are a hardcore offroader I would say a locker. Just depends where you spend most of your time.

Just curious, i'm looking into lockers and/or ls for my truck to go along with my upgrade to 4.10. The thing is i get quite a bit of snow in the winter and love plowing through it. So why are l/s and lockers bad in the snow if you can explain it? is part of it cuz it wouldn't help if snow was pack on both of your diff/pumpkins?

I think it's because people don't know how to drive in the snow. Me, personally I would prefer both of my wheels to be driven; I know how to counter steer If things get nasty just slip her into 4H...

I agree most people do not know how to drive in the snow and some dont even know how to drive on dry pavement. I was recommending the safest option for the majority of people. Personally i prefer all 4 wheels to spin or be pulling that is why i have welded diffs. Nothing better than a 4wheel powerslide in snow. If you are a real good driver and have a good setup you will never have to "slip her into 4H". Ha ha. And for ice it dont matter if you have 400 wheels spinning you arent going anywhere if your tires arent studded. I have a set of tires with sheetmetal screws and slime for those times.
