So I recently bought a 2003 Excursion, but it only came with one key and remote. I know the remotes must be pricy from Ford, but can I get a spare key even made? I see the Theft light on the dash so are they immobilizer keys?
Unfortunately, you'll have to have the dealer set you up with that second key. It's a pretty simple matter to add a third key. Yes, the key'contains a transponder and my Excursion came with only one key also. I went ahead and had the dealer make an extra third key so that I wouldn't have to pay for reprogramming the next time a key gets lost.

You need to have two PATS keys in order to program subsequent keys for your vehicle. If you only have one PATS key, you'll need to visit the dealership, or a locksmith who is set up to program a second PATS key, in order to have a second key made. Either way it will be very expensive.
Once you have two programmed keys, do what I do. Buy a few spares off of ebay, have them cut at a hardware store (my local OSH does it for free) then program the spares with your two original, already programmed PATS keys.
I've purchased all the spare PATS keys for my '99 Lightning, '00 Excursion, '02 Escape, and '03 F150 from ebay and programmed them myself.
Don't have a dealership or locksmith make your third, fourth, or fifth spare key. They'll overcharge you for something that you can easily do yourself.

From reading the posts here at FTE, some dealerships will charge close to $200 bucks for PATS key programming. Some charge around $100 bucks.
Like I posted though, when you get your second key, buy some spares off of ebay (I must have at least three spare PATS keys in addition to the original two, for each of my vehicles), have them cut, then program them yourself.
Here are the instructions for programming spare PATS keys.
Note: You must have two already programmed PATS keys in order to program subsequent keys.
Programming a PATS key:
1. Place first already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting the vehicle, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
2. Within 5 seconds, insert your second already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the new key into the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.
The theft indicator light should go on for three seconds, after which the key will start the vehicle. Repeat this process, from the beginning, for each new key to be programmed.
I found a much cheaper way. One of my keys broke in half ( long story not in truck) but anyway the chip still worked but now only 1 key!!. I also have remote start but the key had to be in ignigtion to work. Solution I took the broken key cut off what was left of the metal stud sticking out so all you have is the plastic and placed it inside of the steering colum real close to the ignition switch. now it reads that code everytime and I can use keys cut from Wall mart that cost $2 had a bunch made. Also my remote start works without key. and the original unbroken key still works guess it reads one or the other code not both.
