All right, first time on the forum and very impressed. I bought a 01 Excursion with a 7.3 a little over a year ago and have dozens of questions. <O</O
My first question is pretty stupid but I’ve looked everywhere for an answer and have not had any luck. How can I turn off all the interior lights while leaving a door or the back hatch open? I’m sure there must be a way but I’ve tried everything. I don’t know if I have a broken switch or there is a secret combination of door opening or something but it’s driven us nuts for more than a year. Please help. <O</O
You must add a switch. You can do it at the junction box or, as some have done, switch the grounds up under the overhead console. I've not done it that way but if you search "Dome Light Override" you'll find my instructions for adding a switch at the junction box.
Ok, I spent hours surfing the internet looking for an answer. I asked several Ford dealerships and I even ordered manuals looking for that answer. I hate waking up the kids every time I open the door! Thank you!!!
There is a switch in each of the back hatch latches. I know this because on of mine broke and the light wouldn't go out at all!
For you, you can removed the interior molding covering the latches, disconnect the switches, and ....here's a trick....jump the two switches by putting a mini fuse in place. It just asts as a jumper, doesn't matter what rating fuse. Fits perfectly. Of course don't reattach the plugs to the latch.
While your there, you could put in a manual switch and run the wires up front so you can turn them on when the kids need light.
On my '01, I installed 4 toggle switches to shut off each dome light circuit from the doors. There is one circuit for each front door, one circuit for the pair of rear doord, and one circuit for the liftgate. I used the factory wiring diagram (purchased from helminc.com) to determine which wires to splice into at the GEM beneath the dashboard.
I thought the goal was to not have the dome lights come on when he opens the back hatch. If we want them all to be off when any door opens, yes, the main circuit is easier.
Why would you go through all of that? What are the advantages of switching each circuit instead of the main one?
On the old '01, I had a repeating problem with the door-ajar switches. Not only could I shut down the offending circuit, I then also knew which circuit needed attention. Besides, if one circuit was shut down, I could still have my interior lights working via other doors and/or key fob. I've not had a similar problem with my '05.
