Has anyone ever use the Accel "supercoil" COPs for the 5.4? Do they buy you anything or just a gimmick? I found 2 kinds at summitracing, one for 2v and one for 3v engines.
They are good inexpensive replacement for bad originals. About 1/2 the price.
The CPU doesn't limit the voltage of the spark, only the duration of the spark. The voltage is determined by how many secondary windings are in the coil. Most performance coils have more secondary windings thus have higher voltage output to the plug.

Let me say it another way-
according to the Strategy (2005 & up 4.6 & 5.4 odb III) the cpu does limit the voltage of spark when certain conditions are met.
one thing to remember is the coil will only output
the amount of energy that is needed to jump the plug gap
wider gap= more energy
more compression= more energy
if your coil has the capacity to output 100,000 volts and it only uses 40,000
you paid way too much for no good reason
upgrade the stuff that helps your engine
unless you are running a high output engine
coils are not the place to spend money
on the other hand in this case when they are cheaper
replace when needed with the fancy ones

My personal preference in manufacturers is MSD. They make COP units. The Accel units are about $29/ea and the MSD is about $49/ea. Accel coils output is more than stock and MSD is 40-45kv. If you aren't using the full potential of these units you wasted your money as a whole set of COP I have read are $85/set. These units are great if you are making gobs of power. If you must have a useable upgrade MSD makes a DIS4 unit. 2 units are required ($365-$505/ea) along with 4 wiring harness' (another $248) and maybe a unit to get a tach signal to the CPU. MSD told me this will work with stock COP's. It will give you multispark under 3000 rpm and will fire anything you use.
Can you really tell a difference at the throttle whether or not it is a performance or just a regular, OEM COP?
No unless you need more voltage than an OEM unit can deliver. Then an aftermarket replacement will deliver that extra needed voltage. An engine only needs so much voltage till the requirement surpasses what can be delivered. Then you need to amplify that voltage going to the coil(s). There are many different units available for your specific needs.
