I'm entertaining the idea of putting my 86 250 4x4 with a 460 on propane. Any of you guys ever tried it?
I don't need all the power the 460 turns out since the gooseneck hitch has been taken out, but I do like the low end torque. It's usually used in fields and pastureland, so speed is not an issue.
I'd appreciate any advise or warnings any of you might have.
Thanks,
Bob
Propane burns very clean, so the inside of your engine and the oil will stay like new. But propane burns hotter, so in severe duty applications, they put sodium filled valves in the heads. With normal use you should be ok.
Also be warned that Propane does not have the BTU content that gasoline does. So your MPG will go down pretty good.
Thanks for the info. I have the "straight up" cam installed. Will I have to change the ignition timing at all? If so, what setting do you recommend? I have stock valves. Will they be compatible with propane?
Thanx,
Bob
Thanks Dave. I seldom do any towing or hauling any more. The heaviest towing I do is a 250 gallon diesel trailer. The last time I pulled it, I actually forgot it was behind me, so I'll bet it will still handle it on propane. I appreciate the help.
Thanx,
Bob
