My 74 F-100 w/ 360 stock when I first got it would only turn about 3,800-4,000rpm.
I put a crane rv cam, lifters and a set of 390 heads on when I pulled the motor to replace the clutch and now it will turn about 5,500rpm but I don't push it past 4,000rpm.The valvetrain of these motors aren't designed for high rpm their more for low rpm pulling power.
6,500 out of a stock 2bbl 360....that is something....I have one that sounds like it does the same. I have no tach, but I'm pretty sure she goes over 6K. Mine has a 2bbl too, stock as a rock, except for the headers I robbed from the 390!
A stock 360 with single exhaust and a 2 barrel is totally done by 4000. The book says that 215 hp @ 4400 but that was in the days of flywheel horsepower and dyno runs with dual exhaust while the real thing had single exhaust. Even when I changed over my 1968 360 to duals the other 400 rpm showed up. But the 2 barrel is the limit on revs after the single exhaust.
On a side note, back in the dark ages the local roundy rounders has a limit of 400 CID for one of the classes. Of course the GM weenies had the 396, but a 390 wasn't really competitive. So the smart boys took a 427 and put a 361 truck crank (after re-machining the snout) in the 427 with special roads and/or pistons and came up with a 393 that would rev quicker and out rev the 396 motors.
I took my 390 to 6500rpms without valve float. Stock with a 2bbl
I should have said that i had a Holley 500cfm 2bbl and true dual exhaust. What I meant by stock was cam, intake, ect, athough i do have 64 hipo heads.
BTW, I was going by the tach.

HP heads are not what normal stock 390s run. The stock 390 valve springs are done by 6000 for sure, most before 5500.
