I've got a 95 F250 with an E4OD, I have an OBD 1 connector. I was wondering what OBD 1, or OBD combination 1 and 2 code scanners some of you may have used in the past, and had good luck with pulling transmission codes from it. From what I've seen doing some research into it, some will or will not show codes.
There are scanners out there that do OBD 1 (which my truck is) and OBD 2 specifically, but there are also the scanners that have the ability to do both. I'm wondering if I'd be better off to get the type that would do both, as I have a newer truck that uses OBD 2. It would be nice to have just 1 scanner vs. 2 in the drawer.
From what I've seen, all 95 trucks in the F 250, F 350 range use OBD 1. I'm not sure about the F 150/Bronco range. The bigger trucks didn't have to go over to the OBD II standard until later due to the fact that they were in a different weight class of sorts. I'm not sure of all of the details though, just going by what I've seen here and elsewhere researching it.
so does anyone know wether i need obd I or II in my 95??? I called one parts store they said II but i went to another they said I. I read the packaging I said 95 ford 5.0 the obd II said 96 and newer??? Im sure its a I because its a 95 but I cant get codes out of it so im hoping i didnt buy the wrong one.
Cody...You can find it up under the hood near the master cylinder mounted on the left fender, you can't miss it. It is about 2 inches long, and inch wide. It will say EEC, or something somewhere along those lines on the connector cap (or whatever it's called...). I just found mine last night. My guess is you have an OBD 1 connection.
All '96 and '97 HD trucks(F250 and up) with the old pushrod powerplants are OBD1. You don't need a scanner to read the codes, just a paper clip and pen and paper to write down the sequence as it flashes on the CE light. See here on how to do it.. www.fordfuelinjection.com. The EEC test connector is under the hood on the drivers inner fender near the brake booster.
Yeah I know where the connection is under the hood. Are OBD I and OBD II connections the same or are they different? the only reason I ask is because I cant get my truck to start and I CANT get ANY codes out of it by self testing it and watching the CEL or with the code reader plugged in. my guess is my eec is fried.
I just had some wild idea that maybe I could get the OBD II scanner and it would magically read something!!!

They are different.
My guess is you lost power to the PCM, not that it has failed. With no power, it is about as valuable as a rock in running the engine. You can't read any codes out of a rock with a scan tool.
Perhaps a thread of your own to help diagnose it would be in order. State whether or not your CEL turns on when you first turn on the key.
I have started a few and havent gotten far yet. Just pondering the thought. and NO the CEL does not come on at all. Where is the EEC actually mounted?? In the cab under the dash or under the hood?? Thats my next point of attack. I just dont know what Im looking for yet theres so many boxes under there.
sorry...for what vehicle...anything pre 96 is obd 1. anything 96 and newer gets obd2. I just went to Autozone and picked mine up for 30 bucks (OBD I, for my 95, f one-fiddy, 5.0, 4x4, 4r70w)

You need to verify that operating power is being supplied to the PCM and that the PCM ground is good otherwise you will be wasting your time and money.
