now. how old are the detectors?? if over 10 years old, replace them.
my father is a retired fire marshal and arson investigator.
his recommendation is to replace the detectors every 5 years, as the sensors loose sensitivity over time, and i have to agree with him. when i was on the fire dept, i saw many smoke detectors that were in the 5-10 year range never go off in a fire, even though they had good batteries in them and went off when the test button is depressed.
now this was over 15 years ago, and technology has gotten better since then, but i still feel safer with new detectors every 5 years, cause the cost of a new smoke detector is a heck of alot cheaper than a new house.
and don't forget to change the carbon monoxide detector too.
I am glad you and sassy are ok. I hope it was not too cold when you had to go outside still wet from shower. When you get those new batteries in the detector test them. Never use the button to test. The button just tells you it works when you press the button and says nothing about the sensor. Use real smoke to test them. I blow cigarette smoke in mine I figure an incense will do just as well.
I'm puttin new in. hard wire w/ battery back up. i wired that when i was rehabing the joint. i just never thought i'd be stupid enough to burn it down on my own. i'm dumber than i thought i was..
Carl...I am so glad that there was nothing more than smoke damage...and that Sassy and you...in that order... ...got out ok!!! Heed everyones advice...get those smoke detectors fixed pronto!!!
I am doing that BIGKEN. i've got them in the roll box. by 9am tomorrow, all will be up. as i look back at what happened the lump in my throat appears. at the time i thought ....Funny and smelly.
i worry King will come on and beat me. deserved i guess.
new Detectors going up tomorrow. and i pay attention to the burner i turn on.
Carl, glad to hear all is alright now, thank god you did not burn down your house, I bet Sassy was sure barking when you can out of the shower though, we just found out that Mike's ex-sister in law's house burned this past Saturday and lost everything. So You better put them smoke detectors up fast tomorrow first thing after you have your coffee though
