86 250, 6.9???

Hey all, Merry XMAS,
Looking at a 1986 250 ext cab with a 6.9 diesel. 200G miles but has been fairly upkept mechanically. New glow plugs and 6volt power unit etc. Starts good, sounds nice and even, some smoke. Going to drive it maybe tommorow, big Dana rearend etc.
Any thoughts send em in.
Cheers Dave

That engine will never let you down. The problem is the truck falling apart around it. That engine should be good for another 100k.

Thanks Dave, actually the truck is decent, it's not a rustbucket, front end and other stuff looks OK.

My father's been running one for 23 years, not well cared for, and with a little work I have been doing to it, it runs great. Take care of it, it will take care of you. Just be aware they do use some oil, just the nature of the beast.

I just picked up an 87 F-250 with the 6.9 a couple months ago or so. Body is good, engine was well cared for, and most importantly......everything still works on it. It's been a great rig and I paid $2600 for it. She's no rocket but built solid and parts are very cheap (for a diesel). If you're not in any big hurry to go anywhere I'd highly recommend it. Good luck.

I use 1 quart per 800, (motor's fairly fresh) my dad's old trucks are more in the 1 quart per 300, but have some pretty good main seal leaks...

A diesel engine does not have a throttle valve or butterfly like a gas engine, so it has no manifold vacuum. But it still has crankcase pressure and fumes like any other engine. Since they cannot put a PCV valve on a diesel (because it has no vacuum), they have a thing in the rear of the intake manifold called a CDR valve. It lets the crankcase breath into the intake manifold so the fumes can be burned. I am not totally sure how it works yet, but I have heard if it's not working, it will let the engine burn oil coming out of the crankcase. I haven't looked at mine yet, but there are guys on here who clean their's up with gasoline to make it work again.

Good info!

Thanks for the replies, I was not feeling so hot today, some kind of bug goin' around, so I didn't get involved in the truck thing today.
When I decide in the next day or so I'll definitely post my progress'

I recently picked up an 84 F250 4x4 with the 6.9IDI/ C6 tranny, it has 118k for $450 smackaroos. It was an old blue berry farm truck, had never been licensed in the 10 years the farmer owned it... it was just used for running around doing chores on the farm. I bought it and I use for plowing snow... damn thing is a bulldozer! Not the fastest but you just can't stop it when it comes to pushing snow! I of course had to put some money into it... brakes, fuel tank, lines, fluids, filters, etc but for just over a thousand bucks I have one heck of a plow truck! Leaks a little coolant and burns some oil, but starts and runs like a dream.
