Electrical Problem - Radio Stays On
Just found this forum and tried doing some searches but couldn't find the problem I am having.
I have a 1999 F350 Diesel Super Duty 4x4. I have owned it for almost 5 years. Before when I would shut off the engine the radio would play until I opened the door and then it would shut off.
Lately when I open the door after shutting down the engine the radio stays on and the clock display is still lit. Also the headlight illumination switch is not being lit when the lights are on.
I checked fuse #8 which controls the radio and headlight illumination switch and it is fine. When I have the truck running and the radio playing, if I remove the fuse the radio continues to play!? When I remove and replace the fuse I can hear a click from the Accessory Delay Relay and if I put my finger on the side of the relay I can feel it switching inside.
I don't understand this.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
Also, does anyone know if the fuse is between the relay and the radio or is the relay between the fuse and the radio?
I thank you for any information you might be able to provide.
Joe
Good tip on the door switch, I didn't think of that. And you are both right it could be a bad bulb on the headlight illumination for the switch.
The overhead lights work as they should. They light when I open the door. When I start the engine they go out. When I leave the truck they go out after a minute or so.

This sounds like a similar issue i had not too long ago with my 06 SD. There are a few different possibilities for what you are experiencing.
1. Sticky door switch -seems to be a continual problem on these trucks
, but since your overhead lights are woorking as they should, I would have to say that this is probably not the problem.
2. Delay Acc. Relay - Though it may be clicking, it may not be functioning properly.....i would try replacing this (word of wisdom.....go get one from NAPA or something. the Ford dealer will try to hit you for $25 for a $6 relay!).
3. Customer Accessories - This turned out to be the problem for me. Do you have any radios, GPS, or other accessories wired in to your truck? As it turned out, i had a bad relay on one of my portable radio chargers, which allowed the battery on the portable radio to backfeed the accessory line (somehow). it was a reall pain in the butt to figure out, but once i got it, and fixed the realy, the problem was gone.
Just a few thoughts....hopefully one of them might help you out!
BY the way....Welcome to FTE!

So it looks like I will work on the switch! And I think I will pick up a relay also. I've got 134000 miles on this beast so it is probably time for some of the little things to crop up.
Thanks sofdchief for the heads up on NAPA vs Ford.
So far the only customer add-on I have found is the former owner had hooked up a trailer brake to the Ford electrical harness (then removed it when he sold it).
Thanks again ZX250 and JOE-M.
Also, where can I get a good set of manuals for this rig?
Thanks again,

I purchased a 2004 Ford Service Manual DVD on eBay last year...and was really inexpensive. Has the full line of FORD vehicles too. But if you want a paperback...I have also seen those on eBay.
Good luck...

I replaced the Accessory Delay Relay and that didn't change anything so I have to assume that the old relay was not the problem.
As to the door switch, I am either looking in the wrong area (the door jambs) or I don't have one. My truck is titled as a 99 but the build date was March 98.
On further checking at night it turns out my headlight switch is illuminating, so the only problem I am having is the radio not turning off. The weird thing is that the radio still plays when I remove fuse number 8 which is supposed to be the one that controls the radio.
I had a problem just recently with the truck not starting but it turned out that when I replaced the batteries Les Schwab greased the posts before clamping the cables on instead of after they tightened them. Evidently over time the clamps slowly worked loose and lost contact. I cleaned the posts and tightened everything and now all is well there.
I would like to find some cables with better clamps with more room for the wrench to tighten the nuts.
So far I have not come up with a solution for the radio though.

Are the dome lights in your trucks working correctly? If the dome light works correctly with the doors, then it is not a door switch problem.
If the radio is staying on longer than 10 minutes it is a relay or wiring issue somewhere.
Thanks for the help if I find something I'll let you know.

Welcome to the site and I wish you would have found us last year. 15 cents worth of WD-40 would have probably fixed your problems with your light/latch. I know it has worked for a whole bunch of folks here, including myself. I hope you haven't paid to replace your door lock actuators which are also a free easy fix, and oh yeah, did I mention we know how to fix your overhead console readout for free as well? Just use the search feature on the blue bar and see what I mean. Again, welcome to the site and hang around for a while.
