Having just replaced my Glow plug relay which had a busted terminal, I started my truck up and with in 2-3 mins my starter motor burnt out with smoke going every where. I can only think that the starter relay which has some non looking OEM wires coming from it could be the problem?? can any one post a photo of there relay so I can compare what wires I should have coming from it before I get another starter thanks or any ideas on what else it could be
i have a 96, and my nieghbor has 80's something 6.9. thought maybe you had the earlier motor and i could get you a picture of his. As far as i can remember, there is 2 wires that go to it. one thick wire to motor and a smaller red wire that goes to the solenoid. if there is other wires, i'm not sure of those.
here is what's on mine:
there are 3 posts on it. the top (smallest) post has a red wire w/blue stripe. The rear/lowest large post has a heavy gauge red, a pair of yellows and a pair of orange wires, and one red (which I may have added for accessories). The front/upper large post has a single red wire on it.

The color wire's I have are a blue on terminal near Battery, The other big post has brown wires coming from it,the small post has a red wire from it. A heavy Duty red wire goes to the Battery and the small black wire runs down to the starter solonoid smaller terminal which post's do the Red battery wire connect to and where is the single black wire suppose to connect to would post a pic but cannot due to posting restriction (newbie I guess)

In most instances the starter solenoid is a power distribution point for battery power.
There should only be one wire on the terminal that has the wire that goes down to the starter.
The rest of the wires should be on the terminal attached to the battery positive terminal.
In your picture, the blue wire is probably a fusible link that should be attached to a different wire color as it goes into the harness.
Two of the brown wires are probably power to the glow plug relay.
The other wire in that bunch is probably from the alternator.
So I would move the blue wire to the rear terminal with the brown wires.
The red battery wire should also attach to that terminal.
The black wire to the lower solenoid would go on the front terminal all alone.

Followed your advice took that blue wire off and put it with the other wires and left the black starter wire on its own, It stopped the starter from running on after starting and has cured the problem.Strange that this all started from changing over my GP relay which had a burnt out terminal which stooped the GP from warming up ?? . Guess I'll just wait for the next problem and do another few thousand miles on it untill then. Have a good Christmas and enjoy the rest of the day, now I can have a beer and clean the grease of me and enjoy the rest of the day thanks
