91 F-150 used only to plow my own drive. I get a metalic "howling" sound like a very dry bearing from the drivers side but only when in four wheel drive. It has the auto locking hubs, which want to unlock every time I backup so I have to ease into it when I start forward. Have been considering warn locking hubs but have held off since the truck only gets use when I need to plow. Could it be the hub making the noise or an axle u-joint. I've seen the posts on hub replacement, how hard is it to replace an axle joint?
My first bet would be your axle u-joint, they're prone to making a ruckus when they start to go out. It could also be your hub but I'd pursue the cheaper stuff first.
As for the hub unlocking when you backup, ITS SUPPOSED TO! The auto hubs on these trucks are designed to lock in place when the axle shafts start spin. When you change directions, the axle shafts briefly stop spinning and hence the hubs tend to unlock themselves. If you want to be SURE that your hubs are always locked while plowing, manuals are a better option.
