Transfer Case
hi and happy holidays.
At my work they are selling a 2001 F-350 PSD XLT Reg Cab Auto with about 30K on it. I can get the truck for under $7500, but i was told that it needs a transfer case and possibly a front driveshaft. I was wondering if anyone knew how hard it would be to change these items out? is it something that i can do in my driveway? any help would be great. It is the manual t-case also, if that makes a difference. I really would like to buy the truck because it has so few miles and its in great shape, but if this is going to be a big project im not sure if its worth it. any thoughts?

Tranny jack is a real good idea. Now I haven't pulled a T-Case from one of these trucks, but I have from an old 70's ford 4x4. VERY HEAVY. Took two of us on our backs underneath to lower it then put it back.

Not a hard job, I have seen it done, but the transfer case in a super duty is really heavy, if you don't have a tranny jack you may want to barrow one.

YEA if you dont buy it I will a psd that cheap you could probly get 10 or 12 with out evean touching it

Ok well i can use a tranny jack from a friend. so i should be all set. thanks alot to all and happy holidays.....Ken.i know its such a good deal...its a great truck i have wanted it since i started working there and it looks like in another month it could finally happen...and lucky for me no real rust..other than the usual spots....because it has been used right next to the ocean all its life...thanks again to all...this site is such a great resource.

Redford- Actually I am not sure why it needs these items. That is just what I was told, but someone else told me that they thought it had the wrong fluid put in when they were changing it, and this ruined the t-case. This is probably what happened, the old mechanic was a little absentminded and had been known to drain oil/fluids and not refil them. The driveshaft i have no idea what is wrong with that, and in not exactly how to tell if there is any issue with it. I have only driven the truck short distances on the grounds and have only used 4x4 one time, but it worked flawlessly. I have not yet had a chance to look it over and take it for a good long ride. But I am thinking that even if it needs some work it would be well worth it. I have already told them that if the truck indeed needs these new parts that I will not pay more than 6K for it, so I think that it would be worth it.
