I don't know what kind of support would be left as it only had a 1yr warranty that ran out 1 1/2 yrs ago.
After searching google it seems that I am not the only one that is having this problem with a 8400 some say it was their mobo and others the cpu but not one of what I have read(and I read a ton) was able to fix with out replacing one and then the other and I don't want to spend a ton of money trying to repair this thing as its not worth that much but on the other hand I don't have the money for a new system.
Looks like I am going to have to break out my old dell 866 and see if I can get that working as norton killed that and thats why I got a new 8400.
You may think the warranty ran out but as long as Dells system says it still has a warranty then that is all you need..
Contact Dell and get your free motherboard...
I am fixing a laptop for a customer and just found out that it is still under warranty... They are send a tech over to replace the Motherboard on Monday.
The owner thought it was not under warranty..
As stated, according to the tag you gave Dell says there is still warranty time left.
Well I got nothing to lose I will check it out and see if there is still some warranty, maybe they got one over on my wife and charged us for the extended warranty thanks for the help.
I spent today building my old dell dimension 866,installed winblows xp pro that my wifes boss just gave me 2 new copys of that he had no use for nice! it only has a 10 gig HD and 198 of ram that I took out of two junk machines but I will have a bigger hd and more ram from a buddys dead e machine as soon as I see him and all and all not a bad little computer at least it works
First of all I would like to thank everybody for their help as it turns out this thing was still under warranty and we never had a clue,we thought it only had a year and never knew that you could go to dells web site to find out it had a three yr warranty(I paid $150 last yr to have it repaired).Dell is sending a tech out this week with a new MOBO and power supply to try and remedy the problem,at least I can chalk it up as a learning experience as I have learned a lot about my system and computers in general in the last 2 weeks and now that I got my old system running again it will be a great garage machine as we will be wireless in the next month, again thanks to everyone
Older computers motherboard bios has a low limit onh how much ram they would support, but the newer ones all support the use of a lot of ram. I have never seen a problem caused by lots of ram on a computer that will support that amount. Also be aware that windows XP won't run well with under 256 meg of ram and you'll want more then that to support your other programs.
The amount of ram in my 866 now is 192 of pc100 and I want to max it out but I don't know how much it will take 512mb or 1 gig anyway to tell how much I can put in it. I only have two dimm slots, I found a guy that has both that will work he has 2 pc100 256 non ecc ram and 2 512 of ram but I don't know which will work,I would like to put a gig in if I could.
I tried dells site but the system is to old,I picked up a 40 gig hard drive and a good cdrw from a friends dead computer but I couldn't use the ram it was DDR.
My 8400 has 2 gig now and can support 4 gig but I don't think I would ever use it as it is I am not using much of the 2 gig thats there now but it moves pretty good when its working.

Glenn,
If you find out how much RAM that your pc will take, PM me.
I have some 'SDRAM' in one of my desk drawers that I took out of one of my many pcs.
I'll check to see how much I have. I'm pretty sure that I have a gig of SDRAM. I'll check, though.
I also have a couple of pcs that I'm getting ready to 'gut' and dispose of.
They are AMD 450 and 500 mhz machines that I built for my kids (2) to take to college (several years ago), and they came home and put them in the basement and left them.
(My kids think that "the old man's house" is their storage facility!)
I also have an older Dell (500mhz Intel) that has (I know) 512 mb of SDRAM in it.
I'm gonna start cleaning this stuff out. . . . real soon! Either that, or I've got some new 'reactive' targets, for down at the range!
Let me know if there is something in particular that you need.
