Hello again
On my 01 X with the 7.3 at idle the power steering wont work. It will kick in at 1,000 Rpm but not at idle. Its hard to get into parking spots because i have to rev it to turn the wheel. I checked the fluid and its good. any ideas
Thanks
Nick
Is your belt slipping ? Jack up the front end wheels off the ground, Try turning the wheel back and forth and than by hand. Could be bad ball joints, steering arms, ect.
I had the same problem as you. I read many post on this and also posted the same question. I was hearing things from this site like it is my tire size (285-75-16), bad pump, ball joints ect ect ect. What I did may not help you but I like to go the cheap route first and fortunately it fixed my problem. On my truck I flushed the power steering with transmission fluid. that helped a bit but at times I still had the no power steering problem. I checked the suspension and found nothing loose or any play at all. So I tried something many on here frown upon. My steering box had a good 6-8 inches of play. (also told this was normal for this truck) So I adjusted it a little at a time and keep driving around the block until the play was gone. I did that more for the slop in the steering wheel but I have not had the power steering go away since! I also put new tires on last week (same size but alot more aggressive tread) and still she turns great!
It worked for me but just remember you are messing with your steering. To tight and you can cause your steering wheel to lock or not return. NOT GOOD!
This problem seems to be happening a lot lately......... Start by checking your belt tensioner. If it looks like it is wobbling at idle, it is probably not applying proper tension to your belt and the pulley on the pump is slipping. If that is not it, there are a few other more in depth things that can be done, but start there and see if that isn't your problem. If it is not, then it may be junk in the system clogging up the bypass valve. If your pump puts out pressure at high RPM, then the pump is working fine. Either it is not spinning fast enough to generate proper pressure at low RPM, or the fluid is partially bypassing when it shouldn't be.
Well guys I got it fixed and my dad is so proud of me
I accidentally flushed the system. Lets just say I forgot to put the cap on tight and lots of fluid came out and I filled it back up with fluid and presto stared it back up and the power steering worked at idle. Thanks guys

Where is the belt tensioner and is there a way to tighten it
Thanks
The belt tensioner is on the front of the motor and is (obviously) a component of the belt system. It is toward the passenger side if I remember correctly, and has two pulleys on it. On will likely have several grooves, and the other will likely have none. The two pulleys are on opposite ends of an aluminum bracket about 6 inches long and it is not adjustable. Either it is working right, or it is not. The belt is woven between the two pulleys in the shape of an "S" and it has a coiled spring inside that puts a constant twist on the tensioner and it is in this manner that it keeps everything tight.
