Aftermarket Tach
Hey guys/gals, I want to get a tachometer for my engine and was wondering if anyone out there has any photos or ideas where to mount? Give me some ideas of make/size and mount location. Thanks.

Check Summitracing for tachs. I would place it off to the right of the steering wheel above the shifter **** when its in 1st gear. Or you could put it to the left in the crevice between the dash and the cab frame. There should be a defroster vent on this side of the dash. This way you have a place for the tach wire to set. That's where I would put mine anyway!

KNow it's been awhile since you posted this, but here's my 2 cents. I just bought a AutoMeter #2890 tach for my truck and mounted on top of the dash just to the right of the instrument panel (directly above where the "on-the-fly" 4x4 buttons would be). The tach reads up to 4000RPM which is perfect for this engine.

I didn't know you could get a 0-4000 tach from Autometer. That is great for the 300 six. Redline would not be an issue as it is at least off the scale (I never run over 4000 and usu only up to 3600 or so). Would like to see photo of it. I have a 0-4000 tach from Datcon thru J.C. Whitney. It appear to be the kind of tach that is used on these engines when mounted on equipment like generators etc. It is great, big face, 100 and 500 increments. Cost $65. Looks great in right side of dash where electonic 4wd controls would go on '95 f150. I sent a photo last week of my tach along with the truck photo to Ken's gallery. Hopefully it will be posted in the 1995's soon.

Kewl Beans! I'll try and get a pic for ya soon as I can, but I have a wiring bug to figure out first. Which wire did you splice into for the coil feed? My coil has a Red w/yellow stripe wire and a solid yellow wire. I connected the tach feed to the yellow (showed as ground when tested), but I keep frying tach's. The only other possible cause I can possibly think of is my power source, as my tach wasn't fused. Any suggestions?

TrailDawg: Here is what I found on my 95 F150 300 I6. There is a rectangular ended piece on the top of the coil on the side away from the engine. The tach is attached to the yellow wire coming out at the front of this rectangular piece (which is toward front of truck). The yellow wire along with a red wire at the back of this rectangular piece and another red wire from beside the rectangular piece all go into a single bundle of wires. Got your email but could not find the 0-4000 tach on the AutoMeter site. I did find some good tech tips such as the one on whether an ampmeter or a voltmeter is better/more useful. Thanks.

LAST EDITED ON 17-Nov-00 AT 09:44 AM (EST)[p]Paul, got the pic of the tach up on my site now, so you can check it out at http://www.geocities.com/timbrwolf25/traildawg.htm
Waiting on film to be developed for the pic of it mounted...should have it by the end of the weekend. THanks for the wiring info......sounds like your's is wired how mine was, so my problem must be related to the power wire at teh fuse box. Thanks again.

Thanks, Tach looks good. It's less cluttered face (compared to mine) is a plus for readability. I tried to get dyno data for a 3" cat back on the 300 I6 from Flowmaster and other companies. None would provide it. However, others using this site say the 3" works and my neighbor (a Ford engineer) said it may help and can't hurt. Soon as my exhaust rots out I am going for the 3" cat back.
