'77 Project Update

New pics of the engine added tonight!
A lot of elbow grease and fresh paint to clean her up... she's almost ready to turn over!

Once the carburetor comes in she's ready to rock!!!

Brakes have been redone (front & back), new pumps, gaskets, shocks, rebuilt alt., hours and hours and hours of scrubbing, scrapping, de-greasing.

What a great hobby! FORDS RULE!

Some more *new* pictures in my gallery. I have purchased the carburetor... can't wait! We have cleaned up the engine bay and are ready to bolt back up and turn the key!

Grill has been cleaned, painted and is ready to roll!
Wheels were given a flat black coat and cleaned up so we can drive the truck before we go forward. Trim was taken off - will stay off... IT IS FOR SALE IF SOMEONE NEEDS IT!

Thanks Dustin
Starting to disassemble the interior, clean things up and begin the sand/sand/sand/sand - paint process.

First though! We will make sure she is mechanically sound and work out any/all mechanical kinks before we go forward with the finishing touches.

ALRIGHT!!!
Carb came in, bolted it on - cleaned up, buttoned up the engine and she turned over on first try like a champ! Ran into some issues though and would like your opinions...

1) Idles like a ROCKET SHIP! Whew, does it idle fast - what adjustment do we start with?

2) Oil leaking from the front engine seal - great... going to have to take it all apart in the front, drop the pan and replace... is this a real pain in the @$$???

3) Lower Radiator Hose - the belt cuts into the hose, and looking at the old hose we took off it did the same thing. This seems REALLLLY strange and cannot be normal, however, it seems like something that may be common. Anyone else experience this? The belt slices into the lower hose and notches out a 'V' shape...

other then that - she runs very well - sounds GREAT!

Thanks guys!

You may have to trim the end of the hoes at a small angle to keep it away from the belts and make sure the belt is not too long, can you use a shorter belt and get it away from the hose? or it could just be the wrong hose altogether, some were made different for just that reason I think. Just do what it takes to make it right..

I'll try to help a bit..
#1 Start with what kind of Carb did you put on the truck? This will help greatly in us telling you what screw where to adjust.
I would check and make sure that the idle screw doesnt need to be backed off to lower the RPMS. It could also be, the Choke keeping it idled up, as well as something like a vacuum leak.

#2 IIRC - its been awhile for me to take a SB apart, but you shouldnt have to drop the oil pan. Just remove the water pump, fuel pump, crank pulley, harmonic balancer, and the front cover. While that is off, its a REALLY good idea to check the timing chain. Since that is only another couple bolts to change. Use a large socket, or a seal driver to put the new seal into the timing cover. Be Careful these are aluminum peices and you can crack it if you get hammer happy

#3 on my 75, the PS pump pulley does this. I flipped the hose around and it moved it just enough to clear the belt. You might try moving the hose back on the fittings ( the WP and/or the Radiator ) to make it just a bit longer and hopefully push it away from the belt.. Might Consider using a Universal Hose, or something Similar.

Hope this helps you out some!

Carb is a rebuilt Motorcraft 2bl 2150

Reading through the shop manuals they claim dropping the pan will be necessary.... atleast everything is clean and freshly painted and removal will be 3 times faster then the first time.

Ran the engine for maybe 20-25 minutes and the hose has a good 1/4'' notch cut in it - I will try backing the hose off each end - I just don't see how this could happen with a Ford pre-bent hose - seems to be a **** poor design.

Thanks man!

NEW PICS ADDED!!!! 2/2/08

Engine is complete, running, not leaking anything and sounds great! In the pics you can see the cleaned up parts, new carb, new alt, new water pump.... makeshift hot air shroud/tube etc...

In the other pics you can begin to see the application of some bondo, some patchwork hole filling and the installation of new front and rear shocks.

Getting busy at work so I haven't been to the in-laws much to get dirty but it's coming along!!!

ENJOY!

Truck has a tendancy to shut-down when just started and put into a forward gear or from a forward gear into reverse. Also, when put it reverse the truck really jumps into that gear - it basically bucks you in the seat and makes a loud sound.

Any idea on either problem?
