Have a buddy w/ a 86 150 xlt w/tilt wheel...auto...302....he has an intermittent problem with getting power to the key to start it...tried spraying contact cleaner around....no luck ....vehicle had not been used for about 6 months and then started to use it some ....now dead...tried moving the tilt up and down and finally got it to start once....left the wheel alone and next time...again would not start....what to check first?..seems all in the column....he has very limited funds...trying to get back on his feet...any help is very appreciated!
There is a rod that runs down the top of the column that activates a switch that is mounted on the left side of column under the dash. down by the floor. There are 2 bolts that hold it to the column and there are slots on this switch that allow you to move it down the column or up the column. I had this problem to and adjusted this switch alittle and it worked fine for a while, but I ended up replacing this switch in the end.
Because it has sat for so long, clean all the battery connections and the connections to the starter relay. Clean the connections at the starter and make sure the bolts are tight. With that said I would look at the ignition switch (not the key part) on the lower part of the column. They are noted for going bad and are cheap to replace. If that goes not fix the problem then I would look at the wiring from the "S" connection on the starter relay and make sure it is not broken/bad.
I've had similar problems on my 84. Cleaning and tightening the battery connections, and the ?coil? pack (not sure exactly what it really is) in engine compartment above front right wheel fixed my problems.
