I have a 1996 F150 4X4 Offroad with the 5.8L / auto, the check engine light comes on intermittently. I notice that when I am pulling my trailer or driving in the mountains it comes on more often. I am getting about 8-10 mpg and believe it should be getting better gas milage. So I got a code reader and it displays the following codes...
0401 = Exaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
0171 = System to Lean (Bank 1)
So now my question is, any ideas on what repairs are needed to correct this problem???
For the p0401 check your EGR valve to make sure it is working correctly. When you open it up while the engine is idling it should choke down and almost stall. If it does not then the ports are clogged going into the intake manifold. You can remove the throttle body and feel down in there with your finger. I have a 97 f150 with the 4.6. If the engine dies down then you have a problem with the DPFE sensor or the vaccuum control valve. I replaced those on my truck before I realized the ports were clogged. Both parts at the Ford Dealership totaled $102.00. I had to remove the plenum which on my truck thats what the EGR is bolted to, and clean it out. No problems since. Can't help you on the other.
