My father has a 1985 2wd f-150 with a 300-6 and a c-6. We had it rebuilt last February and since then we have replaced the factory carb with a "new" rebuilt carb for a 1981 300-6. The problem is that the truck now does not have enough power to get out of its own way. I know that it came with 120 hp, but it feels way under that now. Also we get about 10mpg around town and on the road. Can anyone give me some hints as to why the low power and horrible gas milege? Is the computer messing with the timing because it can no longer be pluged into the carb? We don't want to put a lot of money into the truck, but we're desperate for more power and milege. Thanks for any and all help.
you have messed with the smog gods and now they are getting you!!!
the carb on the 85 has a feedback circuit. the earlier model does not. it will probably be easier to put an 85 carb back in, but you can get it to work.
the deciding factor will be if you have to go through emissions or not. you will have difficulty getting it through without 85 carb in place.
The Book says the 85 has more Power than the 79, but IMHO the 79 Six had more usable power. Mine got 13Mpg most of the time. Cold weather will cause a little loss too. Document what you have before jumping to some expensive conclusion. Go to the Library and look at the Smog maps. Make sure you have the hoses in the right places.
Speed aint all that important, there were Snails on board the Ark, along with the Cheetas!
