Cool Helping out a buddy!!!!!!!!

First off Merry Christmas to everybody. I've got a buddy that is having problems with his 2001 F-250 powerstroke. He is loosing coolant from his radiator recovery tank. When he cranks the truck it blows the coolant out around the radiator cap. This only started happening after we replaced the thermostat and the water pump. The pump is from Advanced Auto and not an original Ford
replacment part. The thermostat is an original Ford replacement part. Thank you for any help you can give me in this matter.

You'd be better off posting this in the SD forum. But if you are 100% certain the stat is in correctly, I say pull it and see what happens. If it doesn't do it, bad stat. The only other thing I could see is somehow you got a reverse rotation pump, or belt on backwards. Just some ideas. And I realize it's frustrating when answers don't come right away. But you have to remember what time of year it is. Alot of guys are out of town and away from their computers. Hell it's 4am here, I just got done assembling my boys present. Patients brother, we'll do the best we can.

My boss has a 2000 SD and he found fluid pushing out of the overflow. It was mixed with diesel fuel and they found that the brass/copper (not sure which) piece that the injectors fit into had corroded through on one cylinder. They had to lift the cab up from the frame to remove the head and replace it.

Check your belt, is it routed correcty?? I dont think that the t stat in upside down causes this, I think that it just lets things flow continuosly because of the force overriding the spring, correct? It should never build pressure to blow it on start up, unless there is a thing as a left and right hand wter pump, but I dont think that there is. I guess, if the t stat was in upside down, and you had the belt routed wrong, that would allow it to shove backwards, but all pressure built by the pump is supposed to be contained between pump and tsat until it opens. I am about 90 percent sure on this one. No kids today, and a lot of poker and drinking lead me to clouded conclusions....

Since it only started once you did the installs, how about taking the thermostat out and trying that. It could be a defective part. I have had that happen before, more times than I want to think of.

Well guys, my buddy took my advice an looked on some old threads here. He thinks advance auto might have given him the wrong water pump, causing the Ford thermostat not to seal properly. I also told him to check out the Diesellite website.Which confirms everything we've dicussed. Thanks again. Ya'll have a good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
