Identifying my driveline

I recently purchased a F250 that I thought was a 68. I didnt know much about these trucks when I bought it but have now found out that its a 68 body sitting on a newer driveline. It is married transfer case and disc brakes so I know that its from the 70s or possibly even the 80s? Does anyone know the easiest way or some different ways to tell what year the driveline is from? Or how to tell if its a 73-79 driveline or a 78-79 driveline and even an 80s drineline?

Like I said its married TCase and disc brakes. It has two frame tanks one on the side and one on the back (not sure if both cam factory in any years?) The front leafs are two leafs each side, and the rear leafs are 4-1 on one side and 5-1 on the other (i have no idea why?).

So yeh any guesses on the year?

the transfer case should have a little tag on it that says its year right on it. You could also look up the BOM numbers on the axles.

Is the frame newer as well? If so it should have a VIN number stamped on the top of the frame up by the heater core that'll give you it's year.

mid '70s 4x4 trucks usually have the original VIN stamped on top of the right hand frame rail. It is close to the exhaust manifold exit. Some people trim the frame to make headers fit, and they cut through the vin...

FYI 2 wheel drives vins are in front of the axle, near the alternator.

Prolly 1976/79.

1976 = First year for disc brakes on 4WD F100/250's.

1980 and later frames are different than the ones used on previous years.

VIN's are 11 digits thru 1980, 17 digits 1981 and later.

1973/79 F250 4WD Regular Cab VIN will begin with F26.

The 1973 thru early 1977 F250 "Highboy" Regular Cab frames are narrower at the rear (33 1/2") than the late 1977, 1978/79 F250 Regular Cab frames (37 1/2").

Last 1977 "High Boy" serial number = Y20,001.

1973/79 F250 4WD's have 2 front leafs as original.

Rear springs should have the same number of leafs on both sides.

The transfer case FORD ID tag will only have a code on it, not the year.

The code will be similar to: D6TA-7A195-AA

Front/Rear DANA AXLE ID Tag: On the left axle tube on the rear end, on the right axle tube on the front end.

The tag is 2" x 1/2" and is held on with two bolts. The tag is just adjacent to the inspection cover.

The tags will have a 7 number ID code similar to: 603010-1.

The codes, when decoded, will tell the year the axles were used, and on what model.
