I am new to this website and hope to learn a lot from ya'll. I recently purchased a 2008 f150, It has a 5.4 , with a 3.73 axle and 4x4. My plans for this truck are use around the farm/towing with a couple of horses in a trailer and general usage. I do have a couple of questions and would truly appreciate some feedback. 1) What kinds of things can I do to increase power/performance/mileage? 2) The wheels that came on this truck (basic XL model) are truly BUTT ugly lol. Do the wheels off of any other ford truck/suv fit on this truck? My tires are 255/70R17. Again , I thank ya'll in advance for any suggestions/advice! Randy
If you find an answer to #1, let me know! I'd love to get more than 14 mpg!! As to wheels, any ford 6-lug wheel will fit your truck. You can check out ebay as well, there's usually plenty of F150/Expedition wheels for sale. Also, if you want to stay with the 17" tires, I'd also check out a few tire places, Bell, Discount, etc.. Normally, aftermarket wheels are cheaper them your OEMs..
Another place to check for wheel and tires is if there are any conversion places near you. Southern comfort is here in Bham AL and I have bought Avalanche wheels with brand new tires for $450. Can't beat it if you want nicer wheels but aren't worried about a more custom wheel.
The 3:73 with the 255 tire will give you a good towing setup. If you change out tires, just don't drastically go up in tire size if you want to keep some towing leverage.
IMO, these trucks have plenty of power. Keep in mind, I remember towing (struggling) with the 200 hp, 8 mpg V-8s of the 90's. Modern truck capability has come a long way, especially for half-tons.

Check out New Take-Off.com for upgraded factory wheels and wheel/tire packages. There you can get XLT OR FX4 wheels for $200-$450 a set, or mounted on either Bridgestone, BFG,or Michelin tires for $700-$900 a set.

I couldnt find Take-Off.com . I really like the idea of using a standard ford wheel instead of aftermarket.
