As soon as my 2008 comes in, I want to install a set of the Akebono disc pads to cut down on the factory pad dust I had on the 2006. Would like to do the install myself. Not a dummy here, use to do all my drum brakes and did do a set of disc pads about 15 years ago, so not a ton of experiance here. On the new 150's, what is required to pull the calibers and remove the pads? Hex head bolts, one or two and any clips holding the pads into the calibers?
Any suggestions on places to get the Akebono pads? Thanks
I think you will find it fairly easy and straight forward. There are two hex head bolts holding each caliper in place. If I remember correctly, 10mm for the rear and 14mm front. Not really sure as it's been a couple months. The front pads have two spring wires that hook to the backing plates and push the pads away from the rotor. I found it easiest to install both pads at the same time with the springs attached. If you change your pads as soon as you get your truck you might not have the issue I have. My rear Akebono pads make a loud honk/moan/howl sound when they are cold and wet. It goes away after the first couple stops. Doesn't do it in warmer weather. I had about 3K miles on my truck when I installed them and probably should have lightly resurfaced the rotors. Good luck and enjoy having clean wheels!
i got mine from rock auto. like said above, it is a very easy job to do. its funny how mbw919 said his rear pads make noise when cold..... mine do the same thing. and i even put on new rotors when i did mine. strange, but ive learned to deal with it. i really think you will like the pads, they work great, and i have very little dust to speak of....... now if i could just keep all the winter road grime off my wheels they would stay shiny !!!
