hello all i have a question about a 2002 ford explorer recently sometimes it doesnt start and if i wait a while it usually starts i checked the fuel pressure it was fine but then it was running and i checked a second time and there was barely any pressure and it wouldnt start and it only seems like the fuel pump is turning on when it wants to do you think the fuel pump is going bad? or could it be a relay by the way when it does start it runs perfect like it was brand new so that makes me think it shouldnt be the filter but then again im not a mechanic so if anyone can help PLEASE
Since it's intermittent, it's tough to tell. If you don't hear the pump run, then your problem is fuel related. I'd start by replacing the fuel pump relay. Cheap and easy fix.
ok so it ran fine all day yesterday after replacing the fuel pump relay but this morning after i went shopping it wouldnt start again until i let it sit for a while can it be the coil pack getting hot or something else that doesnt want to work when its hot? i was letting it get hot yesterday and it was startig just fine or maybe a loose connection? is there any kinds of test i can run to try to narrow it down to what it can be? i keep starting it now and no problems hot or cold im lost PLEASE help
it has plenty of spark the fuel pressure is there everytime i check it. but its starting everytime now it just waits until i go somewhere when i dont want it to break down i just got the chilton on it to see what i can learn on it i guess im gonna start checkin all the wires to the pump to see if i can find a bad lookin connection or ground im so stumped i dont wanna break down again and get towed or sit there until it starts i wish that i could just plug it to the computer and it tell me so i can fix itif you have any thoughts on what to check please let me know ill try everything i cant keep getting stranded with the little ones its to cold out well i check here frequently to see about any assumptions thanks for any info
When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for a second or two. If you don't hear that, then it's fuel related. If you don't hear the pump prime, try banging (gently) on the tank to see if it will then start. When a fuel pump is going bad, they may become intermittent like the problem you are having. See if the problem is fuel related and post the results back here.
