Ball joint replacement?

I just called to get a ballpark estimate on this job- $700 plus parts??!? WTF? How can it cost that much to replace the ball joints! Just trying to see if this sounds way out of whack, if it's not I think I'll be buying a ball joint press and doing the work myself!

It took me an afternoon(5-6hrs) to complete each side in my driveway. I changed some U-joints while I was in there, and the second side did go a little faster, but you get the idea.

The $700 quote was to a well-known chain store where we will be spending the holidays. I just called the local branch of the same chain store- they told me $380 with parts and alignment, cheaper if I don't need the alignment. I'm thinking the **** at the first store must have quoted me for both sides even though I told him only one side needed it. I can live with $400, $700-800 had me wincing in pain! I still might see if I can borrow a ball joint press and do it myself, but that will cut into my snowmobiling time considerably
